To chief shopkeeper Donald Trump this looks as if Canada gets the better deal. He feels cheated and he gets angry. Hence the reach for the tariff machinery to curb imports from Canada.
To the economist, this is flawed reasoning.
Here is a well-argued piece by economist Douglas Irwin, written in plain English. It was published back in 2018 at the Chicago Booth website, under Trump 1.0. The are probably more recent analyses, but the principal arguments are unchanged.
