Yesterday, we had another super neat #Sandstone #Climbing experience in #Palatinate. The reaaaally long and big Burghalder Fels has some great #crack climbing and an almost-chimney that´s fun. Starting in the late evening, it was cool enough, and the late-summer sun brought out beautiful colors. It was 22:00 until we were back at our cars 😂 .
We tried the typically-alpine twin ropes to second simultaneously, and that worked super well!

Last Monday was a "getting my trad on" day at Wintours Leap on the Fly Wall with Mark. I'd actually seconded this route before and remembered it felt quite burly in places. What I hadn't remembered, despite the guide's warnings, was that the top pitch required quite so much big gear - having run out of big hexes, overcammed my remaining big cam, and placing both a decent Tricam and a slightly dodgy nut in smaller placements, it still felt a bit run out towards the top. Still, comedy gear, confidence and a touch of hubris will see you right...

In total this was a superb evening - a nice "Wanderer" 4 to warm up, a simple crack in top rope to train placing gear without risk, and a really hard 6+ dihedral crack just after sunset to finish the day. Abseil with headlamps 🪔🧗♂️🤣.
I'm really looking forward to slowly get into leading easy trad routes here - and I feel so accomplished already seconding so hard stuff 😯
Why is this so fun? Why is that rock so beautiful?

Got on some multipitch trad routes at Dyurrite / the Arapiles on the weekend. First big multi pitch for me and my climbing partner, we took all day to do five pitches (Shroud, 120m, grade 10 (5.4 / 3.b) great fun https://www.thecrag.com/en/climbing/australia/arapiles/the-pharos/route/12921373 if you're interested). Picture is me on Conifer Crack on the second pitch.
Going back to work today to get some rest.

Climbing at Crag Lough, Northumberland - right under the Roman Wall. A god old-fashioned dolerite crag on the Great Whin Sill, one of the main geological features in Northumberland. #Northumberland #RomanWall #Climbing #RockClimbing #TradClimbing

I was in North Wales again this weekend working on our climbing club hut. We did manage to get out for some climbing yesterday after we had finished all our jobs. I supported a couple of novices getting their first experiences of leading on a really mellow route. The weather was amazing for this time of year.

Final climb from Bowden Doors yesterday - around 7pm and still hot in a t-shirt! This is "Black and Tan", a 2-star Severe on Main Wall... nice. 👌

Had a great day climbing in the Burren (Co. Clare, Ireland) with my friend Barry from Limerick.
We developed two new routes (first ascends) at Slieve Rua:
Broken Bum (HS), lead by Barry, and Midday in the Midlands (HS) lead by me. -
Went climbing in North Wales last weekend since the weather forecast looked so good.
Saturday, climbed up Amphitheater Buttress which involved some pretty long lead pitches and some airy scrambling. It was pretty nice leading the final pitch to climb to the summit in sunshine.
Decided to do an easier route on Sunday so picked Chic in the Moelwyns which was bathed in sunshine and really warm.

First trad climbing trip this year in Wales and had incredible weather. I booked a guide to revisit the skills I learned on a course last year to prepare for this summer. Really enjoyed the trip and am keen to get out again!

"Boundary Corner" is a 3*** classic at Great Wanney. I think you can safely say it's a high-value V-Diff, so I just hope the photo captures some of the burly awkwardness of the thing!! 🤣 I backed off it a couple of years ago, but with a decent sized cam (a no. 5 DMM Dragon) to protect the crux, it's actually not too bad. Amazing line and a nice belay tucked in behind that wedged boulder. #Climbing #TradClimbing #Northumberland

First climb of 2025... perfect conditions at Great Wanney. And it's not often you get to say that!! 😂 My previous nemesis, "Boundary Corner", has finally been conquered! 💪😎 #Climbing #TradClimbing #Northumberland

So, once again I find myself lacking actual mountains for #MountainsWrapped 2024, but I think @bergmeister 's year's summary of the outdoors idea is great, so Imma go with it again with some crag pics from the year that have some meaning for me. Sparser pickings for me this year as I haven't got much outdoor climbing in for various reasons; mostly the fabulous British summer, my fave climbing partner heartlessly pushing off to another country for a few months, and me doing a bunch of training courses and assessments. This year included finishing my RCI - which would have appeared in this post but for the minor problems of not having any pics, finishing it in the p**sing rain, and Sheepstor being about the least mountainous place I've climbed. So here goes; meaning as well as description in the AltText

I enjoyed watching this video of Steve McClure #tradclimbing Olympiad last night. It can also be climbed as a deep water solo route but watching the sea around the base of the climb, it looks pretty horrific.

Hardest lead of the day for me. Another epic line, if not quite as striking as the apparently famous Jean Jeanie just to the left. Definitely tougher, despite being the same grade on paper. Such an impressive face of rock and so many interesting lines up it. Weirdly, I almost found this harder than the HVS on the diagonal crack just above, which I managed to second clean despite a couple of awkward gear retrievals.

Back from a trip to the Lake District. On the negative side, I didn't get three days climbing... On the super-positive side, I did get two days of Mountain Training Development Coach training with the ever-excellent John Kettle PLUS a day of climbing at Trowbarrow Quarry. As a bonus, also a nice stay at Lyndhurst Guest House in Kendal and a play at KendalWall on their long autobelays.

Well, it wasn't sport ALL day; Jeremy decided to "try" an E1 trad route in my absolute favourite style (/sarc). Time to see if my occasional and minimal practice has supplied me with ANY jamming skills at all... For those who don't speak UK trad, 5c English Technical is maybe 6a sport - assuming you can jam! This felt ooooo 6c at least 😂

So that was a good couple of days... Got my Foundation Coach done (thanks to Garland Mountaineering and some very patient students who hung around for me to make it to Exeter), then got to spend a chill evening with a friend (Mark), followed by a comfy sofa to sleep on and (better still) a trip to #Dewerstone today to send this rather fabulous VS, Leviathan, in a stunning setting.

I spent this last week in North Wales on a lead #climbing course at Plas Y Brenin. Although it was late in the year the course instructor managed to get us climbing outside every day. We explored many of the interesting crags available including the sea cliffs.
It was a great course and Peter was a great guide and instructor. I’ve learned loads and am looking forwards to getting out next year exploring more of the amazing #tradclimbing places in North Wales.
