  1. "The Roland TR-808 was officially in production for just two years—from 1980 to 1982. Around 12,000 units were manufactured [...]

The TR-808 started to look like its time had come and gone. But ironically, its premature demise was merely the beginning."

  2. Yesterday's setup for my Hiphop workshop with a young + talented rapper and producer. TR-808 Mid Tom triggering the Simmons SDS8 Kick for extra low punches is a very cool weapon and great fun. Hooked up the Korg Volca Beats just for comparison since my client might get into hardware and naturally has to start somewhere. The Volca series machines sound good and are very affordable.

  3. Praising the mighty TRans-808 here … :neocat_sillycat_kisser: . Its distinct all analogue sound, it's flexibility in usage and connectivity , the way you program it (64 steps, variations/fills) :neocat_boop_happy: .
While this one's got a CHD MIDI retrofit, I prefer sending its triggers to various externals :neocat_chew_wire_bzzt:. Along with its pride-y colour scheme, this bass-queen is a cut above the other drum machines. In Assembling A Black Counter Culture author DeForrest Brown uncovers its engineering history in the cooperation between a Black engineer and the japanese development team–an important historical detail mostly untold or just ignored.

I don't mind whether the TR in TR-808 stands for Transistor Rhythm or Transportable Rhythm, mine's a :heart_trans: trans*\rhythm composer . If only me neighbours would approve of its low end as much as I do :neocat_googly_blep:

  4. Today's #303day so it is very fitting that TIL about Charanjit Singh's Ten Ragas to a Disco Beat; a 1982(!) album of classical Indian ragas entirely performed on #TB303, #TR808 and a #Jupiter8 synths.
It was pretty much forgotten everywhere -- including in India -- until re-discovered around 2010, and then credited as the first Acid House record, since it predates Phuture's Acid Trax by five years!

I've listened to it twice in a row today, grinning all the way through it! :acid_guy:

  5. Been trying to find the earliest mention/hype of the 808 for bass in a rap song and this is the earliest I think: 1986 T La Rock/Mantronik “Bass Machine”

  6. CF Premiere: Omicron – Memory Hole

From Perth, Australia, we introduce Omicron, who returns with a new single titled Memory Hole, a release that stands out both for its sonic proposal and for its highly suggestive visual artwork, filled with trippy and introspective elements. The project inhabits a space where memory, perception, and time intersect, with its imagery already hinting at an emotional and mental exploration that directly dialogues with the track itself.

Sonically, this piece stands as one of our favorites within the Electro spectrum. Power, electricity, and attitude are combined with remarkable precision, embedding halos of nostalgia that do not remain trapped in the past, but instead unfold into temporal projections toward possible futures, built upon previously lived pessimisms. The track develops with clear talent, featuring layered sound design executed with great skill, resulting in a perfectly assembled structure from start to finish.

All of this leads to a sonic synthesis that seamlessly blends every element into a cohesive whole, allowing the track to settle and expand across space and time. Memory Hole is not merely heard—it inhabits the environment, seeps into the atmosphere, and lingers, like a persistent echo that refuses to fade, becoming eternal both in sound and in the sensory experience it creates.
