The Walk of (Kurna) Life
Guten Tag zusammen,
bevor ich mit dem heutigen Artikel beginne, möchte ich noch einmal eine Bitte wiederholen: Die statistische Auswertung meines Blog zeigt mir, dass die einzelnen Beiträge für mich durchaus beachtliche Zugriffszahlen von 30 bis knapp über 40 Zugriffe täglich haben. Da ich aber keine Tracker oder ähnlichen Schweinkram auf der Seite installiert habe, weiß ich leider nicht, wer hier alles mitliest. Wenn ihr also die Beiträge lest und euch zu erkennen geben mögt, lasst mir doch gern mal einen Kommentar da. Ich freue mich immer sehr darüber. Jetzt aber zum heutigen Tag:Heute werde wir wieder in der Stadt aktiv. Doch bevor es losgeht, genehmigen wir uns erst einmal ein kleines zweites Frühstück in der Markthalle.
Die Markthalle in AdelaideMatt hat uns den Tipp gegeben, dass man hier in Adelaide sehr gut Jacobsmuscheln essen kann, die es hier in hervorragender Qualität gibt. Wir hatten am Dienstag bereits gesehen, dass mehrere Stände in der Markthalle Scallops, wie sie hier heißen, anbieten. Wir genehmigen und also ein kleines zweites Frühstück.
Solchermaßen gestärkt machen wir uns dann auf den Weg zu unserer heutigen Aktivität. Wir wollen einen Teil der Stadt zu Fuß erkunden und dabei auch einen Abschnitt des Kaurna Aboriginal Walking Trails gehen. Dieser Trail führt an verschiedenen Punkten in der Stadt vorbei, die dann in Bezug zu den australischen Ureinwohnern – hier in der Gegend die Kaurna – gesetzt werden.
Auf dem Weg zum Ausgangspunkt des Trails kommen wir zunächst an einigen markanten Punkten in der Stadt vorbei.
TheaterStatue Queen VictoriaKathedrale St. Francis XavierBlick in die KathedraleHauptpostamtUnsere nächste Station ist dann die Town Hall, also das Rathaus der Stadt.
Hier treffen wir auf Queen Adelaide, die Namensgeberin der Stadt.
Adelheid, geb. Gräfin von Sachsen-Meinigen, war die Ehefrau von König William IV, der von 1830 bis 1837 regierte.
Am Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders War Memorial, steigen wir in den Kaurna Aboriginal Walking Trail ein. Das Denkmal ehrt die von den Ureinwohnern abstammenden Menschen, die für Australien in allen Konflikten und kriegerischen Auseinandersetzungen seit dem Burenkrieg und bis in die heutige Zeit ihren Dienst versehen haben.
Dann erreichen wir den Torrens River, den Fluss, der durch Adelaide fließt.
Der Fluss wird ein Stück flussabwärts durch ein Wehr gestaut und erweitert sich daher an dieser Stelle bereits zu einem kleinen See.
Eins Stück weiter steht die Staue von Dr. Lowitja O’Donoghue. Mrs. O’Donoghue war eine Mitarbeiterin der öffentlichen Verwaltung in verschiedenen Ämtern und Menschenrechtsanwältin. Sie hat sich insbesondere für die Gesundheitsfürsorge und das Wohlergehen unter den Menschen eingesetzt, die von den australischen Ureinwohnern abstammen. Ihre Mutter gehörte dem Volk der Yunamba an.
Ein Stein an unserem weiteren Weg markiert die Stelle, an der im Jahre 1839 die erste Brücke über den Torrens River gebaut wurde.
Diese erste Brücke sowie eine zweite, im Jahre 1844 an gleicher Stelle gebaute Brücke fielen jedoch sehr schnell Überschwemmungen zum Opfer.
Schließlich erreichen wir das Wehr, auf dem wir den Fluss überqueren.
Bevor das Wehr gebaut wurde, wurde die Stadt im Winter regelmäßig durch den Torrens River überflutet, im Sommer trocknete der Fluss dann bis auf wenige Wasserlöcher aus. Da die Menschen in der Stadt auf die Versorgung mit Trinkwasser aus dem Fluss angewiesen waren, wurde das Wehr gebaut, um den Wasserstand zu regulieren. In den 1960er Jahren hatte sich allerdings die Wasserqualität derartig verschlechtert, dass kein Trinkwasser mehr aus dem Fluss entnommen wurde und auch das jährliche Flussschwimmen, das seit den 1920er Jahren regelmäßig ein Großereignis war, nicht mehr stattfindet.
Unsere nächste Station ist das Adelaide Gaol, das Gebäude, in dem sich bis in die 1980er Jahre das Gefängnis befand.
Im Zuge der Besiedlung Südaustraliens ab 1836 wurde der Bau eines Gefängnisses zunächst gar nicht geplant. Anders als in den anderen Provinzen gab es hier keine Sträflingskolonien und man glaubte, die neuen Siedler sein alle rechtschaffene Menschen. Leider wurde man sehr schnell vom Gegenteil überzeugt, sodass bereits im Jahre 1839 das Gefängnis gebaut wurde. Bis dahin wurden Sträflinge in Ketten an Bord eines Schiffes im Hafen festgehalten.
Nach einer kurzen Pause im Café des Gefängnis machen wir uns wieder auf den Rückweg. In der Nähe des Convention Center überqueren wir einen Platz mit Mosaiken, die Wandmalereien der Ureinwohner nachstellen.
Dann erreichen wir den Bahnhof der Stadt.
Auf unserem weiteren Weg sehen wir dann zunächst das alte Parlamentsgebäude der Provinz Südaustralien und schließlich direkt daneben das „neue“ Parlamentsgebäude.
Altes Parlament„Neues“ ParlamentAuf dem Weg zu unserer letzten Station des Kaurna Aboriginal Walking Trails besuchen wir noch die Staatsbibliothek von Südaustralien. Ein Teil des Gebäudes ist der Mortlock Wing, dessen Bau mit der Grundsteinlegung im Jahre 1879 begann und der schließlich 1884 eröffnet wurde. Das Innere dieses Teils der Bibliothek ist seit dieser Zeit nahezu unverändert und beherbergt eine Vielzahl antiquarischer Bücher, die dennoch jedermann zugänglich sind.
Erinnerungen an den Long Room in der Bibliothek des Trinity College Dublin wären wahrscheinlich rein zufällig.
Als letzte Station unseres heutigen Weges besuchen wir schließlich das South Australian Museum. Der Teil der Ausstellung, die sich mit der Geschichte und Kultur der Ureinwohner Australiens beschäftigt ist eine Station auf dem Kaurna Aboriginal Walking Trail und wir konzentrieren uns tatsächlich ausschließlich auf diesen Teil.
Dann ist irgendwann mal wieder der Status „Information overflow“ erreicht und so beschließen wir unsere Runde.
Mit dem kostenlosen Innenstadtbus kehren wir in unser Appartement zurück, wo wir uns noch einen Kaffee genehmigen. Abendessen gibt es heute in einem italienischen Restaurant.
