The man who invented the Mobilis #tourbillon, Joseph Burtin, had been convicted of fraud in Switzerland before he designed it. His movement blended Breguet's fixed second wheel with the off-center balance of Bahne Bonniksen's carrousel, making it easier to build and more durable than any prior tourbillon. For a few years before World War I, a buyer could purchase mass-produced #tourbillon #watches from two different companies in La Chaux-de-Fonds. These rarely-seen today but remain remarkable historical artifacts. The Musée International d’Horlogerie has one of each in their collection!

All of Cécile Schorpp-Vaucher’s assets, including Linzaghi’s #tourbillon and the Montre Squelette #watches were purchased by Charles A. DeLimoge. He set up a company using the brand La Duchesse (another Schorpp-Vaucher trademark) to produce and sell “Montres Fantasie”.

But Russbach decided to re-focus on his primary business: Producing economic watches using the Roskopf system. He sold Linzaghi’s #tourbillon patent to Cécile Schorpp-Vaucher, who had lost access to the Mobilis tourbillon three years earlier. But she was facing bankruptcy by 1909.

In 1910, Charles A. DeLimoge finally brought the Linzaghi #tourbillon #watch to market. This refined version had two wide bridges to support the dial rather than four slim ones and a wide area to view the balance, which rotated around the dial every 4 minutes!

Courvoisier Frères licensed the design, producing the #tourbillon #watch at their La Chaux-de-Fonds factory as the Mobilis between April 1905 and World War I. This was sold as “the people’s tourbillon” alongside the Modernista, an unusual jump hour/flyback minute watch.

La Chaux-de-Fonds watchmaker Jules Russbach was an inventor as well, selling a #watch with a built-in thermometer as well as an 8-day watch of his own design that resembled the famous Hebdomas. He spent 3 years working to bring Linzaghi’s #tourbillon to market.

Italian-Swiss watchmaker Luigi “Louis” Linzaghi invented another #tourbillon at the same time. It was a real oddball, mounting the balance and escapement on a plate that rotated around the dial every 4 minutes! He patented it on August 2, 1905 but sold the design 3 months later.

#psychedelique ? hier après-midi, je suis retourné au bord du canal en divers endroits, et notamment là où j'ai capté des photos du canal, déjà en crue vendredi dernier.
Le niveau était encore plus haut, et je me suis également intéressé au débouché de ce ruisseau, passant en principe via une buse sous le chemin de halage et partiellement barré par une grumes de résineux, générant un beau tourbillon que j'ai déjà photographié par le passé lors de précédentes crues.

Last Thursday, the 20th of June, the new #Bugatti #Tourbillon was presented. After the Veyron in 2005 and the Chiron in 2015, this 2026 model isn't named after a racing driver, but after the tourbillon mechanism, a balancing structure used in mechanical #watches.

Can I just say this is an automotive piece of #art?

Price tag? 3.8 million euros before taxes. Still, it's not because you can't afford a Van Gogh that you can't admire it 🤩.
