  1. Agony Aunt: “Are keyboard touch typing skills ATTRACTIVE!?” ⌨️

Some human males delude themselves into believing certain actions are attractive. Today’s human male has decided his brilliance on a keyboard should be enough to impress even the most attractive dame.

Amy Adams? Sandra Hüller? Sandra Bullock? Other women called Sandra? All should be dropping before his most attractive typing might. Is this so? Let us explore the typing topic.

Touch Typing is the Secret to Great Romance?

    Agony aunt,

I am in agony. I’ve just spend the last 72 hours touch typing my way to the annual Touch Typing Championship 2026. It was the most competitive year I’ve ever taken part in, but I fended off a young upstarter whom tried to STEAL my crown by thrashing him with a touch typing speed of 230 WPM (words per minute) compared to his PATHETIC 215 WPM. What a pathetic boy, he should leave competitions like this to MEN like me.

However, once the event ended and I was crowned the deserving champion I turned and looked around me, rightfully expecting very hot women to begin hurling themselves at me for a date and/or marriage.

    But… nothing.

There was one chick there who glanced at me and I glared at her expectantly, but she just wandered off and got a hotdog from a hotdog stand. Try to comprehend that. SHE WANTED TO EAT A HOTDOG INSTEAD OF DATING A TOUCH TYPING CHAMPION. What is the world coming to? That is feminism. This is the wokeness and it’s ruining society.

I can’t possible be wrong. What could possibly be unattractive about someone being able to have this God-given skill that others can only dream of? It shows:

    • Tenacity
    • Intellectual genius
    • Versatility
    • Emotional intelligence
    • Wit
    • Charm
    • An enjoyment of keyboards
    • Dedication

How can women look me in the eye (me, admittedly not the best looking guy ever, but a touch typing genius) and think this isn’t worthy of their time?

On my Tinder dating profile I lead with it: DEREK, 33, TOUCH TYPING GENIUS

I then list out my many championship victories and link to an article that was written about me, in which I make confident (not arrogant, confident) claims about how superior I am to everyone else. And yet in the last three months I’ve swiped on over 10,000 women and only three have swiped back. One ended up being a guy pretending to be a woman, the other two were scammers thinking I’ve made a tonne of money from my victories. I haven’t. I’ve actually lost money because it’s £100 to enter the competitions. That and the keyboard investments and I’m down about £500 over the last decade due to all of this.

    AND NO HOT WOMEN.

Please. Advice needed. Is it my keyboard?! It’s all black, do I need a more feminine one or something to show off my sensitive side?

    Yours,

    Derek

Hi there, Derek! To help you out, we went out onto the streets of Manchester city centre and randomly began demanding answers from women we encountered: “WHY WON’T YOU DATE, DEREK!?” We roared, “HE’S A TOUCH TYPING WORLD CHAMPION!

It turns out (from the ones who didn’t run away, at least) they’re more interested in personality traits such as kindness, humour, compassion, intelligence, and an interest in the arts.

None of them were impressed or interested in the typing thing. One of them said it was “weird”*. Sorry about that! Maybe take up a new hobby.

*We have subsequently learned Derek had a stroke after reading that someone found the touch typing thing “weird”. Although he’s since recovered from that, he’s quit his day job and entered a deep, dark depression of marathon touch typing sessions. Derek… for GOD’S SAKE, man. This is not the answer. Take up golf, or something.

  10. Suggestions for practicing #TouchTyping in #Japanese (at the kana level, JLPT N4/N5, or primary school level) please?

    I'm giving up on Kana-dojo now, github.com/lingdojo/kana-dojo/

First impressions of japanesetypingpractice.com/ are much better - not as pretty, but it seems to work with the IME on, or supports various romanisations - which is where Kana-dojo failed.

  11. @argv_minus_one Despite I've remapped CapsLock key to left Ctrl — I'm still using CapsLock function (remapped to LShift+RShift) every day.

With touch typing it is necessary to enable CapsLock when typing something only with capital letters. Instead, it will be a crazy juggling with both Shift keys and letter keys :drgn_hide: – switching between LShift for HJKL and the RShift for ASDFG (see the picture) all the time :drgn_flat_nervous:

  12. Not too shabby for a first try.

  13. @onokoto

I learned touchtyping at schools with typewriter. So basically I have no any tips at all. But I remember the typewriter keys at the time were very heavy.

It was much heavier than current computer keyboard. It made the computer keys to be very soft and easy to press.

May be you want to give it a try.

Text editing skill is extremely useful and it will always be useful forever.

But in my experience, I have even more useful skill. It is touch typing.

Whether it is for text editing or number crunching, or thinkering with graphs, touch typing is always super helpful.

  15. I've been working with software and writing code for the last eight years. Nevertheless, I came to a sad realization a couple of weeks ago: I can't type properly.

Yep, that's it. I suck at it. I'm always looking at the keyboard because I forget where the keys are. But finally I had enough. I decided to learn how to type properly, with all my fingers, with good ergonomics, and more importantly, without looking.

  16. When I learnt to touch type, on Linux/Unix over 30 years ago, I chose Dvorak.
Great system, and I am fast, BUT the lack of modern Dvorak keyboards is a nuisance. I switch the keys around, and have to improvise the ‘homekey bumps’.
Cannot be bothered switching to QWERTY. I can look-two-finger type QWERTY at around 80wpm, but the touch-typing muscle memory is too ingrained now.
Editing is a pain if I have to work on a QWERTY system. If I wasn’t such a geek back then, things might have been different now… 😂
Still, you have to be true to your self. 👾🎒🖲️⌨️

  17. I’m pretty sure that I’m talking to a skewed audience here, but anyway:

Did you “formally” learn to type? As in, with software / a teacher or instructor?

If you can add a generation or general age indication in with your answer, that would be useful too.

While typing speed doesn't necessarily translate to productivity, I occasionally get an itch to see how fast I've gotten over the years. #TouchTyping #Emacs #Vim #Neovim #HomeRow folks, how do you type "Ctrl+Shift" chords? such as "Ctrl-Shift-U", "Ctrl-Shift-C", etc?

  31. CW: long post about my personal experience with touch-typing

@Truck I can mostly type without looking at my keyboard. I do like having printed keycaps, but those are mostly for typing special characters, especially when I am frequently switching keyboard layouts (Nordic vs US / Dutch).

Still haven't quite memorised the location of the ø, æ and å keys on the Nordic layout either. It usually goes okay when I'm in the middle of typing, but when I have to think about a specific character, I tend to have a look at the keys.

Positions of cursor traversal keys such as page up/down, insert, delete, end, etc also aren't in my muscle memory, mostly because they tend to differ on condensed layouts such as laptops.

Not quite sure how many fingers I actually use. Probably 7-9? It's not something I usually pay attention to. I've been trying to pay attention to it as I type this, but I think I mostly skip my left thumb and right pinky.

#TouchTyping wasn't taught in school, though they did have a an arrangement with a third party, #Scheidegger, with whom you could sign up for an after-school typist certificate training. Can't remember if this was primary school ('basisschool', probably last 2 years of it then) or the first couple of years of secondary education (VWO in my case) though.

Having grown up with the #MSX2 from the age of 4 or 5 though, I was familiar with a keyboard though. Probably wasn't till regularly typing documents for school during my #VWO years though that I developed some form of touch typing, or perhaps even a bit later when chatting a lot on #IRC (early 2000s?). Never really studied for it, so my fingers probably aren't resting on the right keys, or being used to hit the 'correct' ones (apart from F and J I guess), but it gets the job done, so, who cares?
Late-night typing without a backlit keyboard in a barely lit room probably helped a lot.
