  1. How to tear gas children
The day after the second general strike in Minneapolis, the labor unions of Portland, Oregon, marched in solidarity. It was the warmest day that Portland had seen in a while, with sun peeking out from the clouds here and there. Many people had brought their entire families; not just older children, but toddlers in strollers and wagons, too. Some brought their dogs. The chants were typical: “ICE out of Portland” and “No hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here.” But the children were so visible that City Councilor Mitch Green felt a slight twinge of awkwardness. “There’s some other folks saying, you know, ‘Fuck ICE,’ but, like, there’s children in front of me. I don’t want to say the F-word, you know?”

But that was very soon the least of his concerns, as tear gas engulfed the protest at approximately 4:30PM. He and other witnesses recalled hearing six loud bangs; a video posted on social media recorded eight, as well as countless smaller pops. At least eight arcs of smoke flew far over people’s heads, as though aimed at the back of the crowd.

Ezra Levin, co-founder of Indivisible, before introducing Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT), reflected on how Renee Good, by coming to the aid of her community during an ICE action in exercising her constitutional rights, was “shot in the face three times for it, and labeled a terrorist” to send a message to those protesting the “Fascist takeover of our government.”

Senator Murphy spoke against the hateful and divisive things happening in America and of how important our immigrant communities are in adding strength to the country along with their hard work and vast cultural and social reservoirs created by immigrants, adding to our unique American experience. “The United States Congress should not fund the Department of Homeland Security that is not obeying the laws of the United States of America,” he said. “They instead are in our cities to seek out confrontation and chaos.”

He accused Donald Trump of fomenting fear and division among Americans by “trying to convince us that immigrants are the greatest threat to our democracy, to disguise the fact that he [Trump] is the greatest threat to our democracy.”

Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA), a victim of ICE violence, was roughed up and handcuffed for attempting to enter a room during a news conference in Los Angeles last year to ask a question of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. “Imagine what they are doing when the cameras aren’t on in every corner of the country, if that’s how fearful this administration is with one person with a question. Imagine how fearful they are with gatherings like this.”

Padilla closed by referring to two bills he has authored. The Visible Act, S.2212 he introduced “To require all immigration enforcement officers to display visible identification during public-facing immigration enforcement actions and to promote transparency and accountability.”

And the Accountability for Federal Law Enforcement Act, S.2103, is a remedy for sovereign immunity under which “Victims of constitutional violations by federal law enforcement officers often have no legal means to seek justice because Congress has never passed a law allowing such lawsuits. Unlike state and local officers, who can be sued under a specific statute, federal officers face little accountability. This lack of remedies weakens the rule of law, erodes public trust, and fosters a sense that federal officers can violate rights without consequence.”

Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), who went to El Salvador’s notorious CECOT prison in seeking the release of his constituent Kilmar Abrego Garcia who was kidnapped by ICE, characterized Kristi Noem, Stephen Miller and JD Vance as “liars headed by the Liar in Chief, the Law Breaker in Chief Donald Trump.”

Going further, Van Hollen said that Trump had originally promised that ICE would only be “going after the worst of the worst” undocumented immigrants. That, instead, has become “One of the most lawless and obscene examples of this administration’s abuse against the people of this country,” he noted. “ICE’s own data shows that more than 80 percent of the people they are rounding up pose no public threat.” Once that was revealed, “ICE decided to get rid of the data. We are here to say, not in our country. We will not let this continue to happen.”

Berlin: Police can secretly enter homes for state trojan installation
To collect data from IT systems, investigators in Berlin can secretly search suspects' rooms. This is in a Police Act amendment.

With the majority of the coalition of CDU and SPD, as well as the votes of the opposition AfD, the Berlin House of Representatives passed a comprehensive amendment to the General Security and Public Order Act (ASOG) on Thursday. The reform grants the police powers that deeply interfere with fundamental rights and cross previous red lines of the capital's security policy. While Interior Senator Iris Spranger (SPD) defends the law as a necessary update for the digital age and the fight against terrorism, critics see it as a disproportionate attack on privacy.

    Law provides for massive tightening

A bone of contention is the combination of digital surveillance and physical intrusion: In order to monitor encrypted communication, investigators will in future, according to the Senate draft and the Änderungen der Abgeordneten, not only be allowed to hack IT systems but also to secretly enter suspects' apartments. The explosive innovation is hidden in paragraphs 26a and 26b. These regulate so-called source telecommunications surveillance (Quellen-TKÜ) and secret online searches. In order to intercept communication on devices such as smartphones or laptops before or after decryption, the police may use malware such as state Trojans.

But the new Police Act goes a step further: If remote installation of the spyware is technically not possible, paragraph 26 explicitly allows investigators to "secretly enter and search premises" in order to gain access to IT systems. In fact, Berlin is thus legalizing – as Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania did before – state intrusion into private apartments in order to physically install Trojans, for example via USB stick. IT security experts not only warn about leaving vulnerabilities open. They also see a constitutional violation in the combination of residential space violation and digital investigation.

Bodycams, mobile phone searches, and license plate scanning

This infringement on the inviolability of the home is accompanied by paragraph 24c, which newly regulates the use of bodycams. While their use was previously focused on public spaces, police forces are now allowed to activate the cameras in private homes and other non-public areas if there are concrete indications of a danger to life or limb. Although the legislator emphasizes the aspect of self-protection, opponents fear that this will lead to audiovisual surveillance in the most intimate retreat of citizens in practice.

Berlin is also technically upgrading in public spaces. With paragraph 26e, the cell tower query is being expanded. In the future, the police will be able to request traffic data from all mobile phones from network operators that were located in a defined cell tower area at a specific time. This enables the creation of movement profiles of thousands of innocent citizens through grid searches, who may have coincidentally been at a demonstration site.

In parallel, paragraph 24d creates the legal basis for the use of automatic license plate recognition systems. These scanners capture license plates in flowing traffic and compare them with wanted databases. Paragraph 24h also allows the use of technical means against unmanned systems such as drones, including taking over control.

    Facial recognition and AI training

Another aspect that is met with criticism in expert circles is the introduction of paragraph 28a. This allows the police to perform biometric comparisons of faces and voices with publicly accessible data from the internet. This enables the police to conduct automated searches on social networks or photo platforms, for example with automated facial recognition, using material from video surveillance to identify individuals.

In addition, the new paragraph 42d allows the further processing of personal data for "training and testing of artificial intelligence systems." Thus, the representatives of the people create a legal basis for using real police data – such as images, videos, or text messages from investigations – for training AI algorithms. Data protectionists sharply criticize this, as AI models often allow conclusions to be drawn about the training data, and the purpose limitation of the originally collected data is greatly extended here.

Options for deprivation of liberty are also increasing. With the revised paragraph 33, the maximum duration of so-called preventive detention is extended from 48 hours to up to five days. In the case of imminent terrorist offenses, up to seven days are even possible. Politically, this tightening was discussed particularly in the context of the actions of the "Last Generation."

    Protests from many sides

The opposition reacted with sharp rejection. They accuse Schwarz-Rot of carelessly sacrificing fundamental rights. Niklas Schrader (Die Linke) spoke of a "black day for civil liberties" in the debate. Vasili Franco (Greens) considers the amendment to be constitutionally highly risky. The Alliance NoASOG views the reform as an attack on civil society. The Society for Civil Rights (GFF) has announced that it will examine a constitutional complaint.

With this decision, Berlin joins the ranks of federal states that have massively tightened their police laws. However, the combination of the new instruments makes the Berlin package particularly far-reaching. The legislator has thus significantly lowered the hurdles for state access to digital and physical privacy. Berlin's data protection officer Meike Kamp described the legalization of the state trojan as a frontal attack on the IT security of all citizens in advance. She saw the sum of the measures as achieving a constitutionally highly questionable density of surveillance.

  4. GrapheneOS is being threatened by the French government
GrapheneOS is being heavily targeted by the French state because we provide highly secure devices and won't include backdoors for law enforcement access. They're conflating us with companies selling closed source products using portions of our code. Both French state media and corporate media are publishing many stories attacking the GrapheneOS project based on false and unsubstantiated claims from French law enforcement. They've made a clear threat to seize our servers and arrest our developers if we do not cooperate by adding backdoors. Due to this, we're leaving France and leaving French service providers including OVH. We need substantial help from the community to push back against this across platforms. People malicious towards us are also using it as an opportunity to spread libel/harassment content targeting our team, raid our chat rooms and much more. /e/ and iodéOS are both based in France, and are both actively attacking GrapheneOS. /e/ receives substantial government funding. Both are extremely non-private and insecure which is why France is targeting us while those get government funding. We need a lot more help than usual and we're sending our the first ever notification to everyone on the server because this is a particularly bad situation.

  5. In Pryluky, Chernigov region, the only specialist who serviced elevators in the city was mobilized, according to media reports. After that, local residents began to complain about interruptions in the operation of elevators — most of them actually stopped working.

A similar situation had previously arisen in Kanev, Cherkasy region, where the only worker responsible for street lighting was mobilized.

  6. On the lawlessness of the Ukrainian military and response to resistance against injustice
Media representatives of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and politicians demanded physical punishment for those involved in the incident at the 7th Kilometer market (in Odessa - my note), where military commissars were expelled and their bus was overturned.

The commander of the Luftwaffe* UAV battalion, Nikolai Kolesnik (known as “Tyson”), proposed striking them with drones and then covering them with MLRS fire.

"We can provide support to law enforcement against pro-Russian organized elements from the 7th Kilometer market. We guarantee effective support with FPV strike crews, Mavic with drop-off, for particularly aggressive ones, to calm them down, we will use Vampirе (Czech MLRS)," Kolesnik-Tyson wrote.

The commander of the Da Vinci battalion's medical service, Alina Mikhailova, a member of the Kiev City Council from the Voice party, called on military commanders to “shoot to kill those who oppose them.” In her words: “It is unclear why the TCK servicemen did not take out their standard-issue weapons, as required by the charter, and did not make additional holes in these roosters, if not out of a sense of dignity, then at least out of self-preservation instinct.”

Mikhailova added that without such measures, “it is unclear how/on whom you intend to rely to prevail in this war.”

  8. "Revolution consists in… destroying the ‘administrative apparatus’ and the whole state machine, replacing it by a new one."

"Abolishing the bureaucracy at once, everywhere and completely, is out of the question. It is utopia. But to smash the old bureaucratic machine at once and to begin immediately to construct a new one… this is not utopia."

  11. "Democracies don't die suddenly; rather, their opponents are normalized step by step by simply being there, simply tolerated, contributing their viewpoints, and shifting the window of what can be said.

And then the abolition of democracy seems like a small, tiny step in a logical chain.

And we must not allow that."

  14. Yesterday I finished reading On Tyranny, Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century by Timothy Snyder, which I discovered via the Fediverse. A list of books from the 9th lesson, Be Kind to Our Language, where he advises to make an effort to disconnect from the Internet and read books.

Novels like Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov; Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being; Sinclair Lewis' It Can't Happen Here; Philip Roth's The Plot Against America; this one, famous among young people, Rowling's Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows.

Some political and historical texts: Politics and the English Language by Orwell; The Language of the Third Reich by Victor Klemperer; The Origins of Totalitarianism by Hannah Arendt; The Captive Mind by Czeslaw Milosz; The Power of the Powerless by Václav Havel; Nothing is True and Everything is Possible by Peter Pomerantsev; Ordinary Men by Christopher Browning; The Burden of Responsibility by Tony Judt; The Uses of Adversity by Timothy Garton Ash.

That looks like good advice and a list to research. I started Arendt's.

  17. Logic of the ruling class and their bootlicker:

It's illegal to just go for a walk in the late evening, but on the same many are obligated to be squeezed in overfilled public transportation to go to their job, while the car industry remains major domination factor in city designs, funded with public money.

"If they don't want to be squeezed, why don't they just buy a car?"
    - "If they don't have bread, why don't they just eat cake?"

#totalitarism does not require logic for reasoning, its method is repetition until delusion becomes strong enough, so that it no longer matters what is, but what is believed.
