    When has privatising the public good resulted in jobs? 🤔 Should Australia consider public sector data centres?

  2. “… the moment you privatise a public service is also the day you should set the date for the Royal Commission into the failures and abuses of the system.”

    Decades of indoctrination have led to many of us believing that:
    - Capitalist markets are infallible;
    - the public sector is ineffective/inefficient;
    - the private sector is effective/efficient;
    - government is bad;
    - taxes are bad.
    So yes, we probably will fall for it again.

  4. Yes @ocratato the public service has been diminished. Restoring it to do what we need will take time.

    The private sector is little better. It's grown more narrow-minded and short-sighted. For example; it's less common for tradesmen to take on apprentices, so we have to import qualified tradies. That impoverishes the countries from which they come.

    Extreme Capitalism has lessened Australia. I reckon it's made us dumber.

  5. Market mechanisms have a role to play @ocratato but how much of a role? We've gone too close to Hayek's ideal of the holy, inviolate market in all things.

    Democracies must decide what is best left to the public sector. I suspect that the answer is; "most of what has been privatised" (and probably more).

  6. I struggle to find a privatisation which proved to be in the public interest @ocratato
    Market Capitalism fails, reliably and consistently. My favourite take is from this blog post:
    david.boxall.id.au/201604/defa
    "The private sector cherry-picks profitable markets, then demands public sector subsidies to cover the rest."
    That post hasn't been updated for years, but it's still cogent.

    Australia's telecommunications are the poster-child of failed privatisation. There are good reasons why such natural-monopoly infrastructure has historically been the province of the public sector.

    Where infrastructure is involved, I favour de-privatisation with maximum prejudice. The cost to those who profited from the privatisation should be so extreme that only the brave or foolish will participate in any proposed future privatisation. I picture gobbets of Capitalist gore, clinging to walls & ceilings.

    The rational starting point would be to de-privatise everything, then cautiously allow the private sector to play a limited role if things aren't going well.

    Googling:
    "universal basic income" site:gov.au
    brings up several hits, none from the RBA. So their stance would be 😑.
    Our politicians seem to be 🤔.

  9. @aj
    In the 1980s, I worked in Australia's Commonwealth Employment Service (CES). Businesspeople in my regional city still speak wistfully of the days when they could ask the local CES office for people and would be provided - free of charge - with suitable applicants. These days, finding workers is far more costly (and fraught).

    I came to the conclusion that, with few exceptions, people want to feel that they're contributing to their community. The “Dole Bludger” is mythical.

    Totalitarian Capitalism does not serve the nation well. Australia is rich enough to afford every resident the necessities of life and opportunities to do something that's meaningful to them.

    Coordinated:
    - education;
    - training;
    - careers/occupational guidance;
    - employment/job matching
    would be invaluable, to both to our economy and society.

    "The NAIRU cannot be observed directly."

    Evidently, it's one of those magic invisible things that we peasants can't possibly understand.

    It exists, honest. Trust the experts (& politicians).

  11. Something meaningful to do (not necessarily "a job") is one of the necessities of life @InsurgoFormica
    Unemployment Benefit could be viewed as society's compensation to people for whom we fail to provide.

  12. @InsurgoFormica
    Exemplified for me by the "Non-Accelerating Inflation Rate of Unemployment" (NAIRU). If the economy needs people to be unemployed, then we need a better economy.

    The economy exists to support the community.

  13. Which bring to mind the Harvester Decision:
    "The decision was a landmark case because, for the first time, employers were challenged to formulate wages on the basic needs of their employees rather than being solely concerned with the company’s profits."
    nma.gov.au/defining-moments/re
    That was in 1907. We haven't learned. 😑

  16. I hadn't thought of that @anne_twain
    There are political advantages in being seen to manage crises.

    Creating and maintaining systems that work, while minimising inequity, isn't likely to get the attention of voters. The Opposition would probably spin it as wasteful: "There's no disaster. Why are you spending money?"

  17. Yet more evidence that Australia has gone to an unworkable extreme.

  18. Our system needs to change @Bot4Sale
    Make it easier for independents and micro-parties. It might lead to government being a bit chaotic, but constructive chaos is a good thing. More interesting than Albo's stagnant caution, anyway.

  19. Australia's Labor Party has lost its way.
    “Labor wants workers to receive a better share. It no longer seriously asks whether they should have a greater say.”
    …

  20. On another forum, a True Believer told me that #TotalitarianCapitalism is a contradiction in terms. Apparently, Capitalism is the essence of freedom or liberty 🤔 or something 😑. A bystander looked it up before I could get around to it.

  21. It's surprising how far we've allowed ourselves to slide @Bot4Sale
    OK, maybe not so surprising. History shows that aristocrats will keep increasing their privileges until the peasants remember how to build guillotines. They'll then be puzzled & offended - right before they get the chop.

    Plutocrats are our present-day aristocracy.
