The rain was torrential and came down in sheets. I could not see further than the farm fence behind the house. The sound was deafening, lightning too crashing all around. In the distance, I saw the banks of the burgeoning creek burst, the water flowing rapidly down the paddock towards the property. The ground was already soaked, from months and months of rain. There was no respite, and I knew I was in imminent danger.

I'd been preparing for this. I headed out to the fire station and collected sandbags to buffer the house from the floodwaters. In the days prior, I'd stacked them up. Row by patient row to keep the waters at bay. I hoped that they'd hold, but as the water came rushing down the paddocks like a charging bull, I feared the worst.

The last flood was devastating. I'd lost everything. I couldn't bear it again. I hoped the rains would stop.
