Jessica Rabbit revient : Gary K. Wolf prépare un film en prises de vues réelles après avoir récupéré les droits
Après plus de trois décennies d’attente, le créateur de Roger Rabbit, Gary K. Wolf, récupère officiellement les droits de ses personnages et relance l’univers culte. Au programme : plusieurs projets en développement, dont un film live-action centré sur Jessica Rabbit, inspiré de son roman Jessica Rabbit : Xerious Business. Un tournant majeur qui pourrait redonner vie à Toontown loin de Disney.
Une victoire juridique offrant une nouvelle liberté créative
La récupération des droits après 35 ans
Gary K. Wolf a confirmé avoir repris le contrôle total de ses œuvres grâce à la clause américaine de réversion de droits de 35 ans. Ce mécanisme lui permet désormais d’exploiter librement l’univers de Roger Rabbit, après des décennies durant lesquelles Disney et Amblin partageaient l’exploitation du personnage. L’auteur précise que la démarche s’est déroulée sans conflit, Disney ayant coopéré de manière courtoise et transparente.

Libéré de toute contrainte liée aux précédents accords, Wolf évoque un sentiment de renouveau créatif. Il peut à présent initier ses propres adaptations, revisiter ses romans ou encore développer de nouvelles pistes narratives. Cette autonomie lui permet d’imaginer des projets plus proches de ses livres originaux, notamment Who Censored Roger Rabbit?, dont certains éléments – comme l’usage de bulles de dialogue – n’avaient pas été repris dans le film de 1988.

Parmi les projets en développement, l’auteur met en avant l’adaptation en prises de vues réelles de Jessica Rabbit : Xerious Business. Il s’agit du premier projet étudié, et aujourd’hui le plus avancé. Le roman retrace les origines du personnage, née Jessica Krupnick dans un monde sans Toons, bien éloigné de l’icône glamour connue du grand public. L’histoire la suit dans sa quête d’émancipation, jusqu’à devenir agent secret au sein de XERIOUS, une organisation dédiée à la traque de criminels d’envergure mondiale.

Le livre, comme son adaptation à venir, s’attache à présenter Jessica sous un jour inédit : une femme déterminée, compétente et brillante, confrontée à des obstacles typiques des environnements professionnels dominés par les hommes. Wolf souhaite ainsi offrir un portrait plus nuancé de la célèbre héroïne, loin de la simple figure de séductrice popularisée par le film de 1988. L’action se déroule dans un cadre moderne, un choix assumé pour mieux ancrer Jessica dans notre époque tout en préservant la fantaisie propre au monde des Toons.
Un univers en expansion et un retour très attendu
Des projets multiples autour de Roger Rabbit
Au-delà du film consacré à Jessica, Wolf laisse entendre qu’il envisage plusieurs autres adaptations, notamment celles de ses derniers romans. Il souhaite redonner vie à l’univers de Toontown à travers des œuvres respectueuses de l’héritage original, tout en apportant une dimension nouvelle. Son objectif déclaré : proposer des projets d’une qualité au moins équivalente à celle du film culte Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988), qui demeure une référence du mélange entre animation et prises de vues réelles.

Aucun studio n’est encore attaché aux futurs projets. Cependant, Wolf exprime le souhait de retravailler avec certaines figures clés du film original, comme Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis ou Frank Marshall. Il aimerait également revoir Charles Fleischer prêter sa voix à Roger. Bien que rien ne soit confirmé, cette intention témoigne d’une volonté de continuité artistique qui pourrait séduire les fans nostalgiques de la première heure.
Le retour de Gary K. Wolf aux commandes de son univers ouvre un chapitre inédit pour Roger et Jessica Rabbit.
