  1. In New Zealand we now have fishing competitions without fish because all the water from the rivers must be used for dairy farming.

    Innovation.
    Not.

  2. And we closed the year by bringing the #NitrateEmergency affecting rural communities' drinking water to Fonterra's doorstep, by dumping 2 metric tons of slime outside their headquarters minutes before their shareholder meeting.

  4. CW: Outram Glen & Waihola - no swimming

Warning: There's no swimming in the Taieri River at Outram Glen due to "high bacteria levels." LAWA diplomatically notes, "Research shows that the source of bacteria in the water at this site is ruminant (sheep/cows)..."

    Clue: it's not the sheep.

There's a similar warning for Lake Waihola.

  5. Sorry for the facebook link but Shane Jones is furious about the slime. 🤣

It's not even his portfolio but he couldn't resist a chance to moan about greenpeace. 🤷

  6. Watch the video!

Greenpeace activists in Auckland set up a 'nitrate emergency quarantine zone' outside of New Zealand’s largest dairy company, Fonterra, on the day of the company's annual investment meeting. They poured 2 metric tonnes of slime around the building in protest of rising pollution of lakes, rivers, and drinking water from the intensive dairy industry.

  12. Three Greenpeace activists have been removed by police after protesting Fonterra’s shareholder meeting.

The activists set up a nitrate contamination tent and dumped two tonnes of simulated “toxic” slime at Fonterra HQ, forcing shareholders to walk through it, mirroring what many New Zealand communities are expected to live with as dairy pollution contaminates rivers and peoples' drinking water.

  13. BREAKING! Fonterra HQ is under quarantine! Toxic slime is oozing out of the building’s main doors.

The building has been identified as ground zero of New Zealand’s nitrate crisis. So the Greenpeace nitrate emergency quarantine unit has shut down the building and installed decontamination tents to prevent the nitrate emergency from spreading further.

  16. Our documentary "Something in the Water" is now live online for everyone to watch! 🎞️

This is an important issue that everyone should be more informed about, make a pot of popcorn and give it a watch. 🍿

Something in the Water follows Greenpeace Freshwater Campaigner Will Appelbe through the Canterbury region of New Zealand, as he meets people who are fighting to protect lakes, rivers, and drinking water from intensive dairy industry pollution.

  18. Local media is dropping the ball (again) by mostly failing to connect the extreme weather we've been experiencing to climate change, accelerated by methane and carbon emissions.

In NZ, the biggest source of pollution is agriculture and specifically the dairy industry, followed by transport.

The current government is failing to address this issue, and quite the opposite, making it much worse by bowing to the industry.

This connection needs to be made explicit.
Things will keep getting worse, infrastructure will need to be rebuilt over and over again, homes will be lost, and lives will be broken until we take meaningful action to rework our economy, energy and transport.

The climate crisis is here and our heads are still in the sand.

  19. Privatise the profits ✅
    Socialise the costs ✅

Imagine if we made the polluters pay.

That way we could reduce incentives for harmful activities AND have a pool of money ready to help those affected by climate disasters.

Instead our government is saying climate action is unnecessary, private profits are all that matter and if you get poisoned water, dead rivers, or lose everything in a flood or storm, you are on your own.

    Get. Them. Out.

  31. This has HUGE implications for New Zealand. A large proportion of our emissions is methane from the dairy industry.

How methane emissions are pushing the Amazon towards catastrophe — and how ending methane emissions is our best chance of averting the worst impacts of the climate crisis.

  32. The tobacco industry assured us that smoking didn't cause cancer.

The oil industry assured us that oil didn't cause climate change.

And the dairy industry assures us that nitrate contamination doesn't cause cancer 👀

    #dirtydairy #toomanycows

  33. Of course, Fonterra is delaying its scope 3 emissions reduction goals, let alone the plan to achieve them.

This is why we need the Government to regulate industry, to force them to make the emissions cuts that we require.
