Just when you thought things couldn’t get any worse 😡
An Australian outfit plans to fast-track a dirty new industry in Southland using FILTHY lignite (brown coal) to create urea.
Urea is synthetic nitrogen ‘fertiliser’ that drives dairy expansion, the pollution of rivers and contamination of drinking water and climate pollution.
It would be a disaster.

New Zealand’s water quality is in a dire state, according to a new report by the government.

Damn, Fonterra has a lot to answer for.
Widespread degradation of Southland’s drinking water safety has been exposed in a council-commissioned report.

The equivalent of about 13,000 dairy cows’ effluent is pouring into the sea from Wellington’s waste water plant.
It’s disgusting.
But also, NZ has 6 MILLION dairy cows dumping untreated effluent on land and freshwater EVERY DAY and Luxon wants to increase that number.

CW: Outram Glen & Waihola - no swimming
Warning: There's no swimming in the Taieri River at Outram Glen due to "high bacteria levels." LAWA diplomatically notes, "Research shows that the source of bacteria in the water at this site is ruminant (sheep/cows)..."
Clue: it's not the sheep.
There's a similar warning for Lake Waihola.

BREAKING
Greenpeace has upset Fonterra’s Shareholders’ Fund meeting at the dairy giant’s Auckland HQ, establishing a ‘nitrate emergency quarantine zone’ around the building and ‘returning’ 2000 litres of river slime at the entrances. -
This is absolutely heartbreaking.
Fonterra and the dairy industry in Aotearoa have a lot to answer for.

Free water testing for nitrate contamination – next stop Southland, Canterbury

Labour’s desperate, doomed, decades-long effort to get farmers to like them reared its haggard head again in the announcement of the capital gains tax policy.
For no good reason, Hipkins gave farmers a free pass and undermined his own policy.
The Labour party’s decision to exclude farms from its proposed capital gains tax is just the latest overture in parliament’s most long-running one-sided love affair.

🚨16,000 more dairy cows approved for Canterbury🚨
That's a LOT more urine leaching down into groundwater, cow shit running off into rivers and methane driving the #climatecrisis.
It means more polluted rivers and dangerous nitrate contamination of drinking water for rural families.
While Fonterra makes more profits, we all pay the price.

So Fonterra managed to sell Anchor Butter etc. for $3.845 billion...
Since we've ALL paid the price of decades of rampant pollution of fresh water and the climate by intensive dairy, that money should go to help farmers shift to more plant-based organic regenerative farming!

NZ imports of palm kernel reach highest level in ten years - further undermining Fonterra’s claim to “grassfed” dairy products👇

Fonterra’s $3.845 billion windfall sale proceeds should be used to remediate damage they’ve done to rivers, and to help farmers shift away from intensive dairy to more plant-based regenerative organic farming — not more irrigation schemes and intensification.

With local elections coming up, we've pulled together some quick and easy actions you can take to help defend fresh water! (1/🧵)
TAKE ACTION NOW to help defend lakes, rivers, and drinking water from dairy industry pollution.

The value and importance of farming to NZ - especially dairy - is massively overstated, especially when you count the COST of all those millions of cows polluting rivers, drinking water and the climate.
We bear those costs while Fonterra creams the profits.
