In the annotation of pictorial elements on ancient seals, machine-supported systems are useful for detecting recurring shapes and visual patterns. What they don’t provide is context: ambiguity, wear, iconographic convention, or cultural meaning.
Annotation is not a neutral technical step.
It is the moment where interpretation turns into structured data.That’s why expert control is not optional, but essential.

🔧 Tools & Techniques: Modern Seal Impressions
In antiquity, cylinder seals were rolled over clay tablets to secure documents or goods. We still recreate this practice today – but with modern materials. Instead of clay, we use Fimo, a synthetic modeling compound.
The seal is carefully rolled over the soft surface, revealing its full design. Afterwards, the impression is baked 🔥 so it hardens and can be handled and studied safely.
