  1. So, I'm really digging the idea of having a #ToolLibrary that accepts #TimeBasedCurrency instead of dollars! Wow! I used to be part of the #PortlandME #TimeDollarNetwork (which is still around), and one could even use #TimeDollars to rent #CommunitySpace for events! Having more #TimeBanks is one way to wean ourselves off of #petrodollars and #technodollars!

  3. #RaglanNZ - #ToolLibrary

    #Whāingaroa Environment Centre

"The Whāingaroa Tool Library is an inclusive lending library for tools of all sorts ranging from electric gardening and building equipment through to sewing machines and crockpots. We help the environment – by preventing single-use tool purchases, stopping tools rusting in garages and by purchasing high quality tools that have a longer life thereby reducing unnecessary consumption. We also help the community, by giving our members equality of access to great tools, saving them money, and empowering people to build, share and create in a more sustainable way.

Do you want to become a member?

    - A membership with the Tool Library is $15 for 3 months.
    - There are no extra charges and you can borrow up to eight tools each week.
    - You must to be a permanent resident of Raglan to become a member and provide proof of address and personal identification with your application.
    - Your membership will be approved upon the membership payment being received.

All tools are for domestic, personal use only. They are not to be used for commercial purposes of any kind including holiday home management and gardening services."

  5. #WellingtonNZ - Newtown #ToolLibrary

"Why buy and store tools when we can share!

#ToolLibraries work just like any other library. You become a member and then you can borrow tools. Tools are expensive, and there are many privately owned tools in our community that only get used once in a while. But, if we collectively own and share tools we can save money and the planet while building community. How awesome is that?

The team behind #NTL are all volunteers. We’re from lots of different backgrounds, but share the same passion to build community, and to share skills and resources.

#NewtownToolLibrary is a lending library for tools of all sorts. We have a growing collection of second hand and new tools (donations welcome) available for lending to members. The Tool Library is a project of the Newtown #CommunityCentre, is run by volunteers and is located in neat little nook at 9 Constable Street, Newtown!

    Membership is $30 for a year or $20 for 6 months, or;

If you are a #WellingtonTimebank member, you can pay with 2-timecredits.

Our aim is to keep the Tool Library as accessible as possible while still having a small income to cover tool maintenance, repairs and new tools.

Once you are member, there are no charges to borrow tools."

  18. “No tariffs on #sharing”: #ToolLibraries offer resilience amid federal chaos

    by Truthout & Ella Fassler
    April 29, 2025

Excerpt: "With the price of materials climbing (or set to), many #DIY projects have become more difficult to finance overnight. But what if Curtin’s friend didn’t also have to purchase pricey tools to complete the project? What if he borrowed them all from neighbors instead, and returned them when he was finished? And what if those neighbors helped him through the project each step of the way?

"This is more or less how tool-lending libraries work. Curtin, who is a volunteer and steering committee member of the nonprofit Rhode Island #ToolLibrary #PVDThings, connects people with the tools and know-how to make daunting do-it-yourself projects more accessible.

"For a #SlidingScale Fee, members of the cooperatively-run library have access to a catalogue of about 1,630 items that have been amassed over the past four or so years through donations. #Tools like the power washers, hammers, drills, cameras, lawn mowers, pet carriers, grills and pop-up tents can be borrowed for one to two weeks. But PVD Things is about much more than just the things.

"Volunteers get to know their neighbors and their stories, and provide guidance if they need help. Those volunteers told me about a local poet who borrows pop-up tents and tables to speed-write poems for passersby, and a surfer who borrowed palm sanders and dust extractors to build a fiberglass surfboard from scratch. Another member built out a camper van with their power tools. Several weeks ago, 30 gardeners borrowed rakes, shovels and pruners en masse for a big clean up party at a #CommunityGarden that had been overgrown for years."

Another member built out a camper van with their power tools. Several weeks ago, 30 gardeners borrowed rakes, shovels and pruners en masse for a big clean up party at a #CommunityGarden that had been overgrown for years."

  45. #Florida: Donations wanted for #OrlandoFL and #JacksonvilleFL #LibraryOfThings!

"The #CenterForBiologicalDiversity fights not only to protect wildlife and wild lands in Florida but also to address the underlying causes of the extinction crisis, including the excessive production and consumption of new products.

"That’s why we’re excited to announce that we’re working with #Shareable and other partners to establish Library of Things pilot projects in Orlando and Jacksonville.

"A Library of Things is a shared community resource where useful items can be borrowed just like books that are in circulation for years, reducing the demand to produce new goods that destroy habitat, generate greenhouse gases, create pollution, and harm wildlife.

"Sharing also disrupts the current U.S. economic model that demands endless growth through the constant purchasing of new things. It challenges the traditional consumerist mindset that drives overproduction and leads to items getting thrown away after only a few uses.

"You can support this effort by donating items from the library’s wish lists. Whether it's a bicycle repair kit for someone who bikes for transportation, kitchen items for a new university student, or a generator for emergency preparedness, every item counts. By donating, you’ll help neighbors save money and push back against the culture of consumerism.

    Here's how it works

"The Jacksonville Library of Things pilot, located at University of North Florida dormitories, is looking for donations of board games, kitchen items, phone chargers and tools to be used by students living in the dorms, based on a needs assessment conducted with students in partnership with the University.

"The Central Florida Tool Library (serving Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties) is seeking donations related to disaster preparation and response, as well as home repair and maintenance. These items were identified based on conversations between community members and our partner, #CentralFloridaMutualAid.

"Each wish list notes whether the item can be gently used or refurbished or must be new. (Certain products must be new for the libraries to ensure they meet safety and fire code standards. But purchasing these items once to be shared among the community prevents each future borrower from buying more.)

"Links to secondhand and refurbished sites are included where possible. The wish lists also provide a desired quantity of each item. Once the maximum number of items is claimed, you’ll see the request has been fulfilled. The mailing address to send the products for inclusion in the Library of Things can be found in the wish list."

  47. Free fixes are back! The #ToolLibrary expands its #DareToRepair Café program in 2025

By Darren Cotton, February 3, 2025

"Have broken stuff? Instead of throwing it out, consider attending one of The Tool Library’s free Dare to #RepairCafés this February or March.

"These events cut waste and build community: At each Dare to Repair, people can bring in broken objects like lamps, vacuums, bicycles, toys, clothing, sewing machines, PCs, laptops, and small electronics to be repaired — free of charge — by volunteer fixers. By following along during repairs, attendees can learn the skills they need to fix things on their own.

"The Tool Library, in partnership with #BuffaloRecycles, will host two Dare to Repair Cafés per month in 2025 — adding weeknight events to existing weekend programming — thanks to new funding from the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute and State Sen. Sean Ryan.

    March 2025 dates:

    - Saturday, March 1, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Lancaster Municipal Building, 5423 Broadway, Lancaster, 14086

    - Thursday, March 13, from 5-7 p.m. at the Delavan-Grider Community Center, 877 E. Delavan Ave., Buffalo, 14215

"Anyone interested in bringing appliances or household items to be repaired is strongly encouraged to fill out the registration form in advance."
