El multifacético personaje, piedra basal en el movimiento creativo de Mánchester desde fines de los 70`, se refería a su precario estado de salud al padecer un cáncer renal que requería ser tratado con urgencia. Su escasa disponibilidad monetaria como su posición política lo llevaron a decir "Nunca pagué por atención médica privada porque soy socialista. Ahora descubro que puedes obtener abdominoplastias y cirugía estética en el NHS, pero no los medicamentos que necesito para seguir con vida. Es un escándalo". El fundador de Factory y La Hacienda se refería al Sutent, un remedio que lo ayudaría a sobrevivir al fracasar la quimioterapia que se estaba practicando. A pesar de la colaboración de amigos para poder acceder al fármaco de forma privada, su batalla contra la enfermedad finalizaría el 10 de agosto del 2007. Su legado, además del lugar de prestigio que ayudó a generar para Mánchester en el mundo de la música, ha sido que quienes necesitaran Stutent pudieran acceder a él.
