We had an evening out and survived the city lights and nefarious goings on at Southbank. We got invited to a media screening of "TONY" a film about Anthony Bourdain.
It's a well made film. Quality production and scripting. But it misses for the most ridiculous of reasons.
If this film was simply about a young lad who ends up learning to cook, it would be spot on. Could give it 4.5 stars. I felt the main performance was a little wooden. Maybe that was the directing. IDK. Anyway, if this film was not about the famous man himself, you could just enjoy the film and a well told story.
But because it's about Anthony Bourdain, you keep reading each scene in that context. And it doesn't feel like you understand much about Bourdain by the end of the film that you didn't already know going in. That context kind of makes it very challenging for a script to rise to the standard that Bourdain himself has set.
Glad I saw it. Not high on my list to watch again if I ever have a few hours to kill on a plane flight. It's no Amelie.
