I'm getting better and better at maintaining my kids' Toniebox. 🔧💪
A few days ago, it started erroring out for some specific Tonies. Most would work perfectly fine, but for others it would flash a quick blue light (trying to connect to the internet), then start flashing red without any error message. After about 10 or so red flashes, it rebooted automatically.
I did some internet research, but the results weren't very helpful. I was quickly able to rule out WiFi issues, because the Toniebox showed up as connected to my router and I could see outgoing requests in Pi-Hole.
The next reasonable assumption was that something is wrong with the SD card. Either the card reader or card itself.
I opened up the box, removed the card and when I connected it to a Linux PC, it immediately reported filesystem errors. I let Linux repair it.
At the same time I saw that some of the rubbery glue they used to keep people from removing the SD card had melted over some circuitry. It didn't look conductive, but I carefully scraped it off anyway.
And when I put it back together it started playing all of the defective Tonies and of course everything else. 🤩

So our Toniebox broke (it's not charging or the battery is dead, I don't know). It's only almost a year old, shy 25 days. I contacted their support and they offer me two options: 1. send in and repair, 2. send in and get a 99,99 Euro discount on the Toniebox 2 from their store.
I chose option 2. The box costs 10 Euros that way.
However I'm a bit suspicious on why they offer such a hefty discount. Are they having a hard time selling the new model?!

Es ist nun doch eine #Toniebox geworden. Günstig bekommen wegen kaputten Ohren. Leider lassen die Ersatzohren noch auf sich warten.

Die Lautstärke lässt sich sonst wohl auch über die App regeln, aber ich brauche offenbar beide Ohren fürs initiale Einrichten.

Also das ganze Teil auseinanderbauen. Das geht echt unproblematisch, alles ist gut erreichbar, auch wenn später mal der Akku getauscht werden muss.

Defekte Taster raus, die Kabel etwas abisoliert und an zwei Taster auf dem Steckbrett angeschlossen.

Zack, schon klappt die Einrichtung.
