Golden Water Turtle (Shui Jin Gui) Rock Tea from Tong Xin She Teahouse seems an auspicious way to end the year. Have a happy and safe New Year's Eve!

What tea do you drink on your birthday? Do you pick a special tea or a special type of tea? Or just drink your usual teas? I picked this "Lotus Peak Shui Xian" from Tong Xin She Teahouse as a special tea to start the day and the next year of my life.

The last of the first dozen Tong Xin She Rock Oolong is "Yellow Goddess" (Huang Guan Yin). This rock oolong is a cross between two floral/herbal oolong varieties, the very famous "Tie Guan Yin" and the less well known "Huang Pan". As you would expect, the tea character is not far from Tie Guan Yin, but with more rock elements.

According to the info on the website, all of these rock oolong teas were roasted to the same "medium/medium-light" roast. So I'm not quite sure what to attribute my perception of differing roast levels to. This Golden Peony (Jin Mu Dan) seems to be a bit darker roast. Cocoa/wood the dominant scent/flavor for me, with some incense in the perfume and aftertaste.

2023 Yellow Rose (Huang Mei Gui) rock tea from Tong Xin She Teahouse. Every year I find their Yellow Rose to be a standout tea in the yancha flight. Which is weird, because ostensibly it isn't my favorite yancha style, low oxidation, low roast. It is kind of fruity-incensey this year, very nice.

Back home after the holiday, back to my annual rock tea flight quest. "Mysterious Peony" (2023 Bei Du) from Tong Xin She Teahouse is a medium light roast and medium light oxidation tea. Along with the typical rock tea flavors, I get a touch of coconut. Tropical!

Fragrant Osmanthus (Dan Gui) from Tong Xin She Teahouse is pleasant scented rock oolong with a fairly light flavor. Not sure I really find it evokes osmanthus strongly, more light incense. But then, osmanthus wasn't much a part of my flavor palette growing up in the Midwestern United States.

"Mysterious Orchid" from Tong Xin She Teahouse is a very low oxidation and lighter roast. Orchid fragrance strongly dominant with some small woody backbone. Even a tad of returning sweetness on the aftertaste. A very nice rock oolong, if a bit atypical. A rock tea for Tie Guan Yin lovers.

Third tea from the 2023 Tong Xin She Rock Tea flight is the well known Da Hong Pao or Big Red Robe. A very traditional take on this classic rock tea blend.

Second tea from the 2023 Rock Tea flight from Tong Xin She is Cinnamon aka Rou Gui. Slightly lower oxidation on the Rou Gui than the previous Shui Xian, lighter highlights, tighter perfume.

Most years, Tong Xin She Teahouse, based near Wuyi, China, releases a collection of some of their favorite Rock Oolongs from the previous year. One of my annual indulgences is to pick up one of the luxuriously packaged sets.

Rock Oolong season begins after Thanksgiving. Dug the Gaopan out of storage and found this sample, not sure what year, to start the season. Iron Arhat (Tie Luo Han) is always a favorite rock oolong type.

This "2017 prize winning smoked hong cha" (aka Lapsang Souchong aka Zhengshan xiaozhong) is one of the first teas I ordered direct from China. Thankful to have embarked on this tea journey.

A tea friend said Dancong Oolongs are often the toughest teas to figure out, and less tea in the dose often results in better flavor/scent. Working on restraint, never my strongest suit, with this Lao Cong Man Tang Xiang Dancong Oolong from Tong Xin She Teahouse.

I've drunk a lot of "Lapsang Souchong" over the years, but those from Tong Xin She Teahouse remain my favorites, especially this "prize winning" version from 2017. One of the very few where the tea isn't completely overwhelmed by the smoke. Elegant.

What seems like a decade ago, I ordered a few teas from Jon at Tong Xin She Teahouse. These teas remain my gold standard for how Rock Oolong should taste. This is a 2018 Wu San Di Rou Gui that came in that bunch.

Post thanksgiving, fall rock oolong tea season starts in earnest. 2015 Lao Cong Shui Xian from Tong Xin She Teahouse. One of my all time favorite teas. Thank you!

Google translate has the Chinese characters on the bag as "Flower Machine Full of Incense", but the producer, Tong Xin She Teahouse, says it is 2021 Lao Cong Man Tang Xiang Dancong Oolong and translates it from Chinese as "Old Bush Roomful of Fragrance" Dancong Oolong. Take your pick, either seems appropriate.
