My plans to hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing were derailed by two days of rain and high winds, so we made a plan B: the Tama lakes track, which has somewhat less exposure but still gets up over 1400m. We’re lucky we didn’t try Tongariro given how tough the conditions were at Tama lakes – driving snow and winds on the ridge. But we were rewarded with good views and improving weather on the return trip. #hiking #newzealand #tongariro

Another image I’d like to share with you is from the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. This is a walk/hike of about 20 km on the northern island of #newzealand and takes about a day.

As I’m afraid of heights, this crossing was in a few parts not easy for me, as you have to hike a short part rising 200 metres in altitude.

When you’re at the summit of the red crater, you’re paid off with the view down to the emerald lakes.

From a distance some mosses look more like rocks than they have any right to. (Lichens, of course, are even better at that.) The ones below looked black and were quite hard. If you fell on them, you could get a scrape. Growing at over 1000m on Tongariro you wouldn't expect any less of them. #mosstodon #Tongariro #lichensubscribe
