  5. "/s" tone indicator should just intuitively stand only for "sarcasm", because it taking less effort than being serious correlates to indicator's length. "ar" part that comprises "/sar" is simply redundant. /ser

  6. @victorhck Hombre, "nadie" "nadie"...

    "The Weaponization of Civility

How 'respectful discourse' silences dissent and prepares the ground for fascism

The first warning sign is not a shouted threat. It is a polite correction.

It sounds reasonable. Calm down. Choose better words. Let’s keep this civil. The message is framed as maturity, as responsibility, as a necessary condition for dialogue. But what it really does is shift the conversation away from what is being said and toward how it is being said. And once that shift happens, power rarely has to answer for itself.

Most people have encountered this move, whether in a workplace meeting, a school board forum, or a public comment thread. A difficult truth is raised. Someone becomes visibly upset. Instead of engaging the issue, the room focuses on tone. The critique is no longer evaluated on its merits. It is evaluated on whether it made anyone uncomfortable.

This is not just a social habit. It is a political mechanism.

Fascism does not begin with violence. It begins with behavioral standards that quietly redefine legitimacy. Before dissent is outlawed, it is discredited. Before opposition is crushed, it is framed as unreasonable, unstable, or dangerous. The language of civility is one of the most effective tools in this process because it disguises exclusion as virtue."

  8. Watching liberals like #TimChambers lecture people directly impacted by #CharlieKirk and his ilk as to how they 'should' react to his death has been a good refresher that #liberals & #progressives are not real allies to the marginalized. Even people who had been directly targeted have attempted to tell them the horrific impact on their lives but there is a refusal to permit people the right to their own feelings and reactions.

Charlie Kirk intentionally terrorized broad swaths of society, ranging from the LGBTQ community, to black, indigenous and people of color, to higher education professors (for whom he maintained a hit list) and many, many more.

It is utterly rational, and requires no defense that those on those lists or those who have any empathy for them would celebrate the fact that someone took him out. That does not mean they are calling for violence, it means they have had to live under threat for years, more than a decade in many cases, never knowing when one of his crazed followers would try to harass, assault or murder them and now that person is no longer there to incite such violence.

#TonePolicing those who have to live under such oppression is wrong, it is the opposite of ally-ship and makes clear that as we sink into further oppression they will NOT have anyone's back.

  9. 11 year old meme still true today.

Proof is in the pearl clutching...

They challenge your tone because they want to ignore the content.

Would have liked something in stark contrast to the Trump morass.

Instead, swap some details around and it could have been Jnr and Scaramucci.

    (Does this count as #TonePolicing?)

Can see that having dad doing world-stage "across the aisle" while living as "Joe's son" would bias heavily towards feeling depersonalised.
Running away and changing his name might have made things better. But instead he kept sucking on the family tit.

  12. CW: topic policing and rants about anti-autism ableism in debates and discussions

After being in discord VCs and online VCs in general I have come to the conclusion that my autistic characteristics are disliked by debate bro NTs.

    List includes:

    • I have a solid command of the English language and can argue and defend my positions.

•I can sometimes ramble off about nothing due being passionate about a subject.

•I will not shut up just because you tell me to calm down when you are discussing something important.

•I misread social cues and need to understand where I have made a social faux pas.

•If you say something bigoted, I will not keep calling out the bigoted BS.

•Dismissing me as passionate and ignoring my actual point.

What all of this gets at is these types of NTs need to learn how neurodiverse people operate and stop BSing us as uncontrollable children. I am 24 fucking years old. Treat me as an equal and knock off this BS or fuck off.

  13. Okay, I want to take a moment to talk about toot-shaming behavior on Fedi. But first, I want to thank the person who blocked me for introducing me to the term "pornado"—I will cherish it.

So, there's a kind of reply-person on Fedi who seems to like to *vocally* use moderation tools. It's not enough to block or report someone, they have to loudly announce it, to rub it in. It's a "fuck you *slams door*" kind of response.

I typed out a paragraph defending my OP, but you can see for yourself, it's linked below.

While discussing where to take this post, my girlfriend pointed out that the behavior whiffs of the same thing I was talking about in my "doubt caltrops" post. It's a way of policing behavior that isn't against any rules, but that *they* find personally objectionable.

Just filter/block/report as necessary and move the fuck on.

  14. @p0lise Zwei paar Schuhe.

  15. The amount of #TonePolicing in the C++ subreddit discussion of this is completely unacceptable. If it wasn't for its fans, #CPlusPlus might have a chance at being a programming language with a future.

I swear that deleting my #Reddit account was almost as good a decision as deleting my Ecks account.

  19. @gvlx

In all seriousness, how do you phrase "this package in your distribution isn't working at all for anyone in any circumstances" in a positive light?

The companies involved in creating distributions aren't charities. IBM, Canonical, RedHat, etc, should be working on this already.

  20. @michael I believe it is time to leave #Mastodon for something else. The #Fediverse has become nothing but an elitist cargo cult with rules so strict, the #puritan sect looks pale in this regard.

To create a stable society is not trivial but the decisions taken in this village violate human rights and I do no longer love this #CancelCulture and #TonePolicing

I guess we need many more experiments until federation finds a balance.

  21. And if you actually think my words are going to instigate a mob that searches out and kills a billionaire.....well you embarrass me with your high expectations, do you think hordes of uncouth working class oiks are hanging on my every word?
You think our people are the same as their people and will go on a supermarket killing spree at the sight of a guillotine gif?

It's saying more about you than us, the 'horde' as you see it....
