  2. #ScribesAndMakers ~ Are you more comfortable communicating verbally (or signing/ other non-written) or in writing?

    Verbally.

    But it also depends on what is communicated;
    ~ Chitchat? Verbally, absolutely.
~ Instructions? In writing, one wouldn't want to misunderstand them.

    Since Tom Stoppard noted...
"We are tied down to a language which makes up in obscurity what it lacks in style."
... I'm not sure it matters which medium I choose. Let's cauterise obscurity together.

  3. "When you write, it's making a certain kind of music in your head. There's a rhythm to it, a pulse, and on the whole, I'm writing to that drum rather than the psychological process."

~ Tom Stoppard, born today, 1937.

  4. BBC Radio have recently released a bunch of plays by #TomStoppard, so I've been listening to them.

He's clearly a big #PinkFloyd fan -- one of them (Darkside) is basically set to Dark Side of the Moon as a soundtrack. The whole thing. In order.

The one I'm listening to right now has Syd Barrett as an important (but off-stage) character.

This realisation makes it now less surprising that the intro to the film of Rosencrantz and Guildensterm is set to "Seamus" from Meddle...

    Celebrating Stoppard: Albert's Bridge
    Spotlight

Tom Stoppard's Albert's Bridge is part of Radio 4's Celebrating Stoppard collection.

This is a 1988 production of the play first broadcast in 1967, the year Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead opened at the National Theatre.

Albert is a philosophy graduate who turns the painting of a vast railway bridge into a comic, quixotic search for meaning. Up on the ironwork, suspended above a world that looks reassuringly like a model railway set, he has found something rare: perspective. The only question is how long it can last.

Funny, strange and with serious foundations worn lightly, Albert's Bridge won the Prix Italia and an award at the International Radio Play Festival in Prague.

    Albert ..... Paul Copley
    Kate ..... Diane Bull
    Fraser ..... Geoffrey Matthews
    Chairman ..... George A Cooper
    Fitch ..... Peter Baldwin
    Dave ..... Richard Tate
    George ..... John Sampson
    Mother ..... Eva Stuart
    Father ..... Alan Dudley
Painters ..... Norman Bird & Stephen Rashbrook

  6. @990000
    I’m a little freaked out.

Calling it a day, I want to read until sleep arrived. My current book depresses me. “No, something else.” With Stoppard’s recent passing, I thought, “Arcadia!” I don’t have a copy. The only downloadable version is L.A. Theater Works’ audio recording. Wonderful, but I want the words to sing them myself. I’ll buy the Grove Press edition tomorrow.

Disappointed, a Fediverse chuckle would have to do.

First thing I see is this post. Wow

  7. David Mamet, about Tom Stoppard, in The Free Press:
"Steven Spielberg asked Tom to write the screenplay for Jaws, and Tom said he couldn’t as he was writing a play for the BBC. Spielberg said, 'I'm offering you a fortune to collaborate with me on a Hollywood blockbuster, and you turn me down to write a play for BBC TV?"
    "No," Tom said, "BBC Radio."

  8. With Oscar-winning playwright Sir #TomStoppard sadly passing away 2 days ago aged 88, here's 2 UK news reports highlighting his career.
Who knew although uncredited that Spielberg tasked him to rewrite big chunks of #IndianaJonesAndTheLastCrusade in particular the "Junior" and "Senior" conversations.

And now, so is Tom Stoppard. RIP.

Il commediografo e sceneggiatore, premio Oscar per Shakespeare in Love, è morto a 88 anni nella sua casa del Dorset. Nato nell’ex Cecoslovacchia ma naturalizzato britannico

  14. #RIP #TomStoppard, an absolute genius playwright. I had the pleasure of appearing recently in a community production of his first big success, "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead." It's a brilliant play, simultaneously funny and unnerving, and also the trickiest script I've ever dealt with. Hail and farewell. bbc.com/news/articles/c74xe49q
