BBC Radio have recently released a bunch of plays by #TomStoppard, so I've been listening to them.
He's clearly a big #PinkFloyd fan -- one of them (Darkside) is basically set to Dark Side of the Moon as a soundtrack. The whole thing. In order.
The one I'm listening to right now has Syd Barrett as an important (but off-stage) character.
This realisation makes it now less surprising that the intro to the film of Rosencrantz and Guildensterm is set to "Seamus" from Meddle...

Celebrating Stoppard: Albert's Bridge
SpotlightTom Stoppard's Albert's Bridge is part of Radio 4's Celebrating Stoppard collection.
This is a 1988 production of the play first broadcast in 1967, the year Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead opened at the National Theatre.
Albert is a philosophy graduate who turns the painting of a vast railway bridge into a comic, quixotic search for meaning. Up on the ironwork, suspended above a world that looks reassuringly like a model railway set, he has found something rare: perspective. The only question is how long it can last.
Funny, strange and with serious foundations worn lightly, Albert's Bridge won the Prix Italia and an award at the International Radio Play Festival in Prague.

Strong revival of Arcadia: past scenes gripping, present-day strand less urgent. I felt I followed all the theory as I watched, yet somehow left the theatre with most of it vanished from my head. A confident, thoughtful staging.

I’m a little freaked out.Calling it a day, I want to read until sleep arrived. My current book depresses me. “No, something else.” With Stoppard’s recent passing, I thought, “Arcadia!” I don’t have a copy. The only downloadable version is L.A. Theater Works’ audio recording. Wonderful, but I want the words to sing them myself. I’ll buy the Grove Press edition tomorrow.
Disappointed, a Fediverse chuckle would have to do.

Tom Stoppard has died. 😢
I'd lie if I said I read a lot from him, but in college I fell in love with his play Arcadia, to the point that I spent several weeks translating it, just because (the things we did before the internet and social media).
Of course, it was officially translated shortly after, and I found my translation better (I don't mean it was, I lacked some modesty back then).In any case, it makes me want to read him again. ⤵️

Tom Stoppard died.
He's my favourite playwrite (tied with Beckett). I fell in love with R&G Are Dead when I found an old copy to read as a death-obsessed kid, and for years (as a death-obsessed adult) would watch the movie almost every day.
I remember reading it over and over again when I was about 10 or 11, thinking it held some sort of secret about death and finally working out that it was actually really funny. And thrn the feeling of realising that those moments of humour were actually quietly horrific.
I remember rediscovering how clever it was after reading Hamlet for school and understanding who the characters in R&G Are Dead actually were.
I remember being fascinated by Dreyfuss' portrayal of The Player: "..Blood is compulsory—they're all blood, you see.." seemingly conjuring the entire world of that play in one simple line.
"Whatever became of the moment
when one first knew about death? There must have been one, a moment, in childhood, when it first occurred to you that you don't go on forever. It must have been shattering, stamped into one's memory. And yet I can't remember it. It never occurred to me at all. We must be born with an intuition of mortality. Before we know the word for it, before we know that there are words, out we come, bloodied and squalling.. with the knowledge that for all the points of the compass, there's only one direction
and time is its only measure."I'm sad.

Farewell Tom Stoppard. I had him down as someone who should have won the Nobel Prize for Literature but didn't. A playwright of dazzling inventiveness and erudition whose work still managed to be amazingly funny and accessible.
