A 2 day trip with Moray to explore above the Ailnack Gorge in the Cairngorms. Wow, it's Scotland's biggest glacial meltwater channel, at 10km long & over 100m deep in places. Most of the way no path, just following sheep tracks or ploughing through heather or bog. Quite tricky to photograph that sort of scenery and also get a dog (safely) in the pic. We camped upstream where it was safe to descend & cross.

Shame about the teething problems which I hope get resolved but the houses are innovative in their own way as buildings in character with the older surroundings and people weren't allowed to buy them as second homes. Badly needed modern housing in rural Scotland.

Found out my #Tomintoul granny threw dynamite over the side of the Grantown-on-Spey bridge 😳💣. Her dad had been a foreman on the roads and had some left-over dynamite in a shed. When he died she took it (sticks?) by car and threw it down into the river. Now have visions of a #BridgeOverTheRiverKwai ending scenario over the #Spey - bomber Bessie 🤣

Christening the new arrival #Scalan - in honour of the historically significant seminary. It kept the pilot light of #Scottish #Catholic faith alive during dark days. Deliberately tucked away in the middle of nowhere #BraesOfGlenlivet near #Tomintoul. If you didn't know it was there, you wouldn't. Handy name for a machine that will be hidden away...quietly getting along doing the Lord's work.

Another 2 day trek with Moray: from #Tomintoul followed the #RiverAvon upstream for a day and a half to the #FordsOfAvon, then through the #LairigAnLaoigh and round the shoulder of #BynackMore to #Glenmore. Overnight camp by the River Avon, it's great to be able to sit outside the tent at this time of year, before the midgies get going.

A distant relative died recently in her 90s. Another of the #Tomintoul diaspora. She came to #Glasgow in the 1950s and worked as a community midwife...in the #Gorbals. And yes she got about the #NoMeanCity streets on a bicycle. Respect 👊. She donated her midwife's bag
(something straight out of #MaryPoppins) to Glasgow Women's Library @womenslibrary... and a "string bag"...to use in weighing the bairns👶 🤣

Housing in Moray: Praise for affordable homes in Tomintoul
Delighted to see this housing development in my mother's village of Tomintoul. Really hope some young families get them. This scheme tries to tackle the usual rural problem of buy-to-let 'holiday homes', seasonal not occupied year round and then the local folk not able to afford to buy property.

Gisteren was het een drukke maar hele mooie whiskydag. Gistermiddag begon ik met twee whiskyworkshops voor elk 60 deelnemers van de gemeente #Deventer en daarna naar het prachtige #Vereenigingsgebouw van #Stork in #Hengelo. De #KwaliteitskringTwente vierde haar jubileumjaar o.a. met een #whiskyproeverij. De Spey Tenné en de #Tomintoul 16 waren de favorieten van de avond. De #Finlaggan #CaskStrength was voor de happy few.
