Playa Grande.- El jefe humanitario de la ONU, Tom Fletcher, dijo a EFE que las sanciones a Venezuela se deben flexibilizar para que no afecten la llegada de ayuda y los planes de recuperación tras el doble terremoto.
«Para nosotros siempre es importante que tengamos excepciones humanitarias, que nada de lo que necesitemos para el apoyo humanitario esté sujeto a sanciones», dijo el subsecretario general de la ONU para Asuntos Humanitarios en una entrevista desde Playa Grande, una de las zonas más afectadas por los devastadores terremotos.
Fletcher consideró que los sismos van a causar una «situación económica muy difícil», que restará «varios puntos al PIB» y quieren trabajar con organismos financieros como el Banco Mundial o el Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI) para que se comprometan «en avanzar más allá de esta fase de la crisis humanitaria y hacia esa recuperación a más largo plazo».
Y añadió en que estarán «insistiendo en las excepciones humanitarias para asegurarnos de que ninguna ayuda esté sujeta a sanciones».
La Oficina de las Naciones Unidas para la Coordinación de Asuntos Humanitarios (OCHA) considera que se necesitan 300 millones de dólares más -ya se han recaudado una cantidad similar- para llegar a 1,3 millones de personas que han sido afectadas de alguna forma por el sismo, según una evaluación que ha hecho la ONU y ONG de las necesidades.
«Existe esa necesidad a largo plazo de ayudar al pueblo venezolano en este momento, y no solo de lidiar con la situación humanitaria, sino también de lidiar con la reconstrucción a largo plazo, la reconstrucción del país. En última instancia, no solo reconstruir vecindarios, sino reconstruir la esperanza», apuntó Fletcher.
La ONU busca asegurar la ayuda a Venezuela
El coordinador humanitario reconoció que la eficiencia en la distribución de la ayuda «nunca será perfecta», pero pidió mayor coordinación: «en una zona de crisis como esta, al lidiar con una operación tan compleja, no puede ser perfecta. Lo que tenemos que hacer es coordinarnos de la manera más efectiva posible entre todos estos diferentes socios, incluyendo, por supuesto, a las ONG y al sector privado».
«Tenemos mecanismos robustos en marcha para asegurarnos de que la ayuda llegue a donde se necesita. Y no queremos ver ni un solo dólar yendo a ninguna otra parte que no sea salvar vidas», reafirmó el diplomático británico.
El devastador doble terremoto de magnitud 7,2 y 7,5 de magnitud del 24 de junio ha causado, según el último balance oficial, 3.685 muertos y 16.740 heridos. –sn–
