The bit that you skip #243: Tom Petty – Runnin’ Down a Dream

It’s a weird fact that a few decades ago, it seemed that an artist had a halflife of 3 albums (at most) or 6 music videos, if you go for MTV standards. The popularization of synths, which led to home producing a decade after, pushed many bands from the 70s to other territories. The Cure benefited by being early adapters of synths, making their harsh songs into expansive soundscapes.

Tom Petty had a career decision to make at the tail end of the 80s, as 1987’s Let me up (“I’ve Had Enough”) wasn’t the hit he needed. With the experience of being a part of the Traveling Wilbury’s, Petty decided recording a solo effort, with collaborations from some of the Heartbreakers, and some of his Wilbury’s cohorts, in particular Jeff Lynne.

Jeff Lynne’s always been an underrated musical genius. He’s got a good ear for catchy songs, but still enjoys expansive rock atmospheres. Full Moon Fever was released in 1989, produced by Petty, Lynne and Mike Campbell (Heartbreakers).

Full Moon Fever was a breath of fresh air for Petty’s career. It allowed him to venture into a heartland sound that intersects Mudcrutch and Traveling Wilburys. Y’all know Free Fallin’ from Jerry Maguire, and I Won’t Back Down is one of those songs with long standing promises that actually comes off as sincere.

Petty doesn’t entirely cut ties with his sound. Love is a Long Road is a typical arena rock ditty from Petty and works as a quick respite from all the changes.

It’s Runnin’ Down a Dream where the album becomes a five star affair. That catchy riff, the “speed down the highway 20 miles above the limit” bass, and that cracking solo. No wonder Rockstar chose it as one of the songs for KDST on Grand Theft Auto San Andreas: it’s a perfect song to listen to while driving on long ass roads.

A fond memory I have of this track was Superbowl XLII. I was out and missed most of the first half, but sped back home and managed to catch the halftime show. My dad was watching the game and he enjoyed Petty’s set, especially Runnin’ Down a Dream. The song gave us a bit to talk about during days and he was a man of few words, so any conversation was much appreciated.
