Hello from Tokyo! Today is Green Day, the first of the “Golden Week” holidays in Japan this week. For lunch, the wife and I went - fittingly - to “greenCAFÉ” in the Tokiwadai area of Itabashi Ward. Buckwheat galette (with bamboo sprouts, blue cheese, egg, ham) and iced coffee. 👍

“Café Lexcel” in the basement of the Tokyo International Forum in Yūrakuchō did a pretty good job today delivering the Hōjicha roll cake exactly as specified on their ad 🤞 (both cake and coffee were delicious).

First-time visit this afternoon to “Take it easy COFFEE”, a shop that opened earlier this year in the Shimo-Akatsuka area of Tokyo’s Itabashi Ward. The iced Soy Latte from their home-roasted espresso blend was quite satisfying, and the accompanying chocolate chip cookie provided a nice, not overly sweet balance. ☕️🍪

Nezu Coffee

Wrapping up my small series of posts from the visit to Tokyo’s Nezu area last Sunday, here are a few impressions from “Matcha & Espresso Miyano-Yu”, a café uniquely located in a renovated and re-purposed former sentō (communal bathhouse). Their specialty are matcha drinks, but I went with a Flat White coffee which wasn’t too shabby either. ☕️

Occasionally skimming Google Maps for (North) European shops in Tokyo, I recently came across a Swedish cafe in Higashi-Ōjima (Koto Ward). Last Saturday, we went there for lunch and quite liked it. The food (hot dogs and cardamom rolls) and coffee were good, and the location by the Kyunaka River is really nice.

"Uno Cafe" near Katori Jingū is a place that we had discovered on our first visit last year. Established in 1937, the place has a quirky and unique interior that feels very homely. Their specialty sweets are Kusadango, and they make an absolute banger of a Caffe Latte from their own roast (I brought back a small bag to enjoy their flavorful coffee at home over the next couple of days). ☕️

Today’s lunchtime at one of my favorite cafes in Itabashi: “cafe arica” in Minami-Tokiwadai. Ingredients for my favorite choice, Piadina, are currently in transit from Italy, so I went with the Tagliatelle Bolognese which was delicious nonetheless. Iced Caffe Latte and Tiramisu for dessert, and a bit of reading (German version of Arto Paasilinna’s “Year of the Hare”). Life is good 😊

I had some consular stuff to do early yesterday morning at the German embassy in Hiroo, which gave me an opportunity to take a stroll (and some photos) in the adjacent Arisugawa-no-miya Memorial Park. Had left home on an empty stomach, so afterwards headed to the nearby “HauS Bake & Cafe” and tried their “Special Morning Plate” which was quite satisfying.😋

Having a day off today for some errands and doctors appointments, and went for lunch at “Cafe&Dining 自由自在” in our neighborhood. The owner is a very nice woman who makes a delicious and balanced variety of dishes every day, and combines them into a satisfying and reasonably priced (¥1,200) lunch set. (Insider tip: her Tamagoyaki is the best I had in Tokyo so far). Also had an iced coffee.
