Tok River Fire (#289)

Size: 325 acres Location: 10 miles south of Tok, AK.

Start Date: June 19, 2025 Cause: Lightning Containment: 34% Total Personnel: 28

Bucket drop operations continue to work on the east side of the fire, focusing on heat markers identified by the IR (infrared) drone flights, fire officials are able to focus on multiple hot areas that have the most threat for fire growth. There has been good progress from the dozer line on the north section of the fire.

Weather – 20% scattered showers forecasted the next two days. Light precipitation occurred today on each fire but smoke is still visible. Warming and drying with low relative humidity expected mid-week and through the 4th of July weekend.

Aircraft and Drone Restrictions – A temporary flight restriction (TFR) is still in place over the fire and will continue to be until further notice. The public is asked not to fly any type of aircraft, including drones, near the fire area. Unauthorized drone (UAS) flights pose serious risks to the effectiveness of wildfire suppression operations. Aerial firefighting is suspended when unauthorized UAS are inthe area, allowing wildfires to grow larger.

Evacuation levels for neighborhoods near the 7 Mile Lookout Fire (#222): Residents north of Butch Kuth Ave and on Jack Wade Rd are at READY (Level 1). Residents on Butch Kuth Ave, Osprey, Moose Nugget, and Goshawk Rd are at SET (Level 2).

Today’s Activities – Crews continue to focus on the northwest corner, as it remains a priority and the most critical area for the fire. The documentation of hotspots created by the IR (infrared) drone flight (unmanned aerial systems (UAS)) continued to verify that the north and west sections of the fire have the most heat markers. Concerns of natural resource issues have led fire officials to not proceed with the proposed dozer line on the southwest side of the fire. White Mountain Type 2 Initial Attack Crew has installed over two miles of hose lay to address areas of heat. The crew will continue to secure dozer lines alongside assigned smokejumpers. The Clackamas Type 2 Crew out of Oregon joined suppression efforts on Tuesday. Fire personnel are patrolling at night to monitor fire activity.

#TokRiverFire (#289), located 10 miles south of Tok, is currently estimated at 132 acres. The Tanana Chiefs Conference Fire Crew and dozers are working towards establishing a fire line on the western flank to prevent movement towards the Glenn Highway – Tok Cutoff. A dozer road is being constructed from the Glenn Highway Tok Cutoff to the west flank. Two helitack crews are assisting suppression efforts.

#TractorTrailFire (#334), located 4 miles south of Northway, is estimated at 88 acres. Two fire bosses, one helicopter, and 12 smokejumpers are supporting suppression efforts. Helicopter dropped 24,000 gallons of water on Tuesday. Fire bosses targeted the eastern flank, while hose lays were installed on the western flank.

Additional support including 1 field observer to help gather information and intel for firefighters, 2 resource advisors to help record disturbances to resources from fire activities, and 1 UAS drone module will be surveying fire perimeters.

Was scouted Sunday and was reported at 132 acres. There are still no immediate threats to this fire but we will continue to provide updates.

Four other fires continue to burn in limited suppression areas approximately 18 miles north of the Alaska Highway and about 37 miles northwest of Tok, east of the Taylor Highway. These fires are not currently threatening any communities or structures. The Ladue River Fire (#275) has merged with the River Trail Fire (#276)

Fire activity on the Seven Mile Lookout Fire (#222) Located nine miles southeast of the Tok cutoff remains active but showed noticeable spread to the east and south Sunday.

Dozer crews made significant progress, constructing dozer line from the edge of the fire to the Tok cutoff. This connection strengthens containment efforts by improving access for firefighters and creating a defensible edge along the road.

Air resources supported suppression efforts throughout the day, including:

-1 single engine air tanker

– 1 Type 2 Helicopter

All of the air resources have been helping drop water onto the Seven Mile Lookout Fire

In the GO evacuation areas, firefighters have been working to protect homes and infrastructure. The Tok Fire Department has played a critical role, supplying nearly 20,000 gallons of water to support structure protection efforts on Goshawk Road and nearby evacuation zones.

Crews have installed sprinkler systems, wetted vegetation around homes, and cleared brush to create defensible space. These efforts raise local humidity levels and help slow fire spread if it approaches these properties. Their work is vital in reducing the risk to homes and keeping firefighters safer during suppression operations.

Tok wildfires: evacuations in effect, structure protection underway, community meeting tonight

“A community wildfire meeting will be held today, June 23, at 6:00 PM at the Tok Dog Mushers Association Hall, located at 1311 Alaska Highway, Tok, AK 99780”

Evacuation orders are in effect for areas east of Tok due to fire activity from the Seven Mile Lookout Fire (#222), which is burning approximately three miles west of Mile 118 on the Tok cut off, about nine miles southwest of Tok.

Residents at Butch Kuth Ave, Osprey, Moose Nugget, Goshawk Rd are under GO (Level 3) evacuation orders due to the Seven Mile Lookout Fire (#222) burning half a mile west. If you’re in this zone, leave immediately. Fire crews and Alaska State Troopers are working to keep these roads clear to ensure public safety.

Evacuation preparedness is essential for residents living off Butch Kuth Ave & Jack Wade Rd. These neighborhoods are under SET (Level 2) status. Pack essential items, secure pets and important documents, & be prepared to evacuate quickly if conditions change.

Several neighborhoods off of Mukluk in Tok are in READY (Level 1) status. While there is no immediate threat, this is the time to create or review your evacuation plan, pack a “go bag”, and stay tuned to local alerts and updates
