#OTD Sept 4 1804, Irish immigrant to Upper Canada Joseph Willcocks was appointed sheriff of the Home District (basically the GTA north to Georgian Bay)...
he had earlier worked for Peter Russell and William Jarvis, members of the "Family Compact"
always a provocateur, Willcocks was elected to Upper Canada's Parliament several times... he fought with the British at Queenston Heights in 1812, but in 1813, he turned traitor, forming his Company of Canadian Volunteers to fight against the British
in December 1813, he was instrumental in a most despicable act, the burning by the Americans of the town of Newark (Niagara-On-The-Lake)
#OTD Sept 4 1814, in the Siege of Fort Erie, Willcocks was shot and killed fighting for the Americans... he is buried in an unmarked grave in Buffalo
