2024 Wrap-Up: Podcasts
Thanks to all of the #podcasts that invited me on this year!
My "Looking Back on Genre History" #ScienceFiction segment ran each month on #StarShipSofa.
I talked to #Potterversity about my book chapter "Dark Arts & Secret Histories: Investigating #DarkAcademia"; to #TrashCompactor & #NewBooksNetwork about my book #StarWars: Essays Exploring a Galaxy Far, Far Away; & to #NewBooksNetwork about my book #StarTrek: Essays Exploring the Final Frontier.
I also talked #Tocqueville with the #VitalRemnants podcast & #MaryShelley twice with #TheMcConnellCenter podcast.

« Tocqueville est peut-être le premier libéral à théoriser clairement un système dual dictature/démocratie au sein d’un même État appliqué à deux groupes différents : les sujets (arabes) et les citoyens (français). »

“The President, who exercises a limited power, may err without causing great mischief in the State. Congress may decide amiss without destroying the Union, because the electoral body in which Congress originates may cause it to retract its decision by changing its members. But if the Supreme Court is ever composed of imprudent men or bad citizens, the Union may be plunged into anarchy or civil war.” - Alexis de Tocqueville, Democracy in America, 1831

I was delighted to join the #UniversityOfLouisville’s year-long community examination of #Tocqueville by discussing #AFortnightInTheWilderness. Tomorrow I’ll be leading a seminar for #Kentucky teachers on this text.

@GottaLaff @emptywheel. The bar to do the right thing -- to protect #democracy, to protect all of us -- has disappeared. But don't #Kavanaugh et al. understand that they are inviting their own undoing? I would encourage some of the #Supremes to go back to their #Tocqueville and read the part about self-interest rightly understood.

@Green_Footballs. Clearly the bar to do the right thing -- to protect #democracy, to protect all of us -- has disappeared. Given that seemingly indisputable fact, I would encourage some of the #Supremes to go back to their #Tocqueville and read the part about self-interest rightly understood.
