Am 4. Dezember ­­­­ist der Internationale Tag der Banken. Wenn Banken zusammenbrechen, sind davon unter anderem jene betroffen, die ihr Geld bei diesen Banken angelegt haben. Im schlimmsten Fall verlieren sie ihre Ersparnisse. Auf Grund der Vernetzungen von Banken untereinander können bankrotte Banken wiederum andere Banken in den Ruin stürzen. Wenn eine solche Kettenreaktion beginnt, spricht man von einer Bankenkrise. 2008 brach die Lehman Brothers Inc., eine US-amerikanische Investmentbank, zusammen – das führte auch zu massiven Auswirkungen auf viele Banken in Europa. Banken können zusammenberechen, weil sie sich z.B. am Finanzmarkt verspekuliert haben. Um kurzfristige Spekulationen etwas einzudämmen, wurde die Idee einer Finanztransaktionssteuer diskutiert. Bereits in den 1970er Jahren hatte der Wirtschaftswissenschaftler James Tobin eine solche Steuer vorgeschlagen (Tobin-tax).
