The New Nebula Award Finalists
The Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers Association has released its list of finalists for the new Nebula Awards. These are some of the best stories, movies, games and more from 2025, and a great way to boost your to be read list. If you’re an SFWA member you have until April 15th to vote on your favorites.
The list is available in lots of places but I’ll link to Andrew Liptak’s site because he has already done the work of finding links for the stories that are available online. Thanks, Andrew!
I’ll copy the short stories here, but click through to Andrew’s site for links to the novelettes and more. And do I love that many of the top short story markets are open access? I do!
Here are the finalists for the 2026 Nebula Awards
Best Short Story
- “Through the Machine” by P.A. Cornell (Lightspeed Magazine, 5/25)
- “Six People to Revise You” by J.R. Dawson (Uncanny Magazine, 1-2/25)
- “In My Country” by Thomas Ha (Clarkesworld Magazine 4/25)
- “The Tawlish Island Songbook of the Dead” by E.M. Linden (PodCastle 2/18/25)
- “Because I Held His Name Like a Key” by Aimee Ogden (Strange Horizons 6/16/25)
- “Laser Eyes Ain’t Everything” by Effie Seiberg (Diabolical Plots 5/25)
I’ve only read a couple of these stories so this promises to be a treat. Happy reading everyone!

Esoteric Languages Challenge Coders to Think Way Outside the Box
I will definitely have to look into this. This has so many applications for me.

I put the book: Forty-Four Esolangs The Art of Esoteric Code on my reading list.

It never fails. I place a bunch of #library holds on #ebooks I want to read and sort my #ToBeRead list based on the wait times. Then something I'm really looking forward to from lower on the list suddenly becomes available weeks ahead of schedule.
Oh, no! Whatever shall I do?
Anyway, I just started #Oathbound!

The bibliophile is the master of his books, the bibliomaniac their slave.”
— Henry Ward BeecherI look at the overspill of #books from my shelves and the #ToBeRead piles and I sometimes feel overwhelmed like 'is this too many? Will I live long enough to read them all?' but keep succumbing to bargain find temptations but I am also in awe & love of the copious beautiful art and photography books and the strange compelling range of other fiction & nonfiction books I own.

Just bought at the American Book Center in Den Haag: Spear by Nicola Griffith. I absolutely adored her very clever historical novel Hild, so I grabbed this Percival retelling without thinking. It’s a small, attractive hardback to boot.
Also finally bought, A Life With Footnotes by Rob Wilkins. Yes, I’ve been putting it off too and it might sit on the shelf for a while.

Ohhh, looking forward to this, new addition to the eternally tottering TBR tower - the fabbity-fab Denise Mina is doing a Philip Marlowe novel this summer.

Recent, current and forthcoming to-be-read pile (not including some other books in PDF format to read on tablet too). And despite this, I still have a couple more forthcoming releases on order, and several more books of the Secondary TBR pile in my locker at work...

Today's bookmail included On the Ravine by Vincent Lam:
https://bookwyrm.social/book/856329/s/on-the-ravine
"In his downtown Toronto condo, Dr. Chen awakens to the sound of streetcars below, but it is not the early morning traffic that keeps him from sleep. News banners run across his phone: Fentanyl Crisis; Toxic Drug Supply; Record Number of Deaths. From behind the headlines, on the same screen, glow the faces of his patients, the faces of the what-ifs: What if he had done more, or less; or something different? Would they still be alive?"

Upcoming release, due out at the end of February, 2023 is number 6 in the Peter Clancy series from TW Lawless - Beachdaze
https://www.austcrimefiction.org/book/beachdaze
"Only a heart attack could make Peter Clancy leave his beloved London and the excitement of his work as an investigative journalist. He moves to a quiet coastal town in Australia, the perfect place to write a new book while avoiding all bad influences."

I’m currently reading A Primate’s Memoir: Love, Death and Baboons by Robert Sapolsky as recommended by #WhiteHorseBookgroup. I’m about three quarters of the way in and loving it. I’d hoped to have finished it by now but the festivities got in the way. According to my #Goodreads tally this will be the 117th book that I’ve read this year. I’ve just counted up the books that make up my #ToBeRead pile and it comes to exactly 117! I either need to get reading or head to the bookstore! Possibly both
