  1. Happy Halloween!

I took this shot up at Tipsoo Lake the other week and, as soon as I did, I knew it would be the photo I'd post today.  Is it a traditionally Halloween image?  Nope, at least not in the modern "fun spooky" sense.  In the dark, brooding Gothic sense?  Yes, to me it does.

For a more traditional subject I've included a pretty little crow that sat still long enough to get their photo taken on a recent walk.  :)

  2. Last week was all about color, and this week is all about black & white.

I'm a fan of black & white photos of mountains, especially when the sky has some high wispy clouds to give it texture and interest, and Rainier really delivered.  Couple that with white snow around the lake, dark trees, and delicious reflections of it all in the water and I was very much in my happy place.

I've got a couple more I want to share next week, so keep an eye out for them, probably Tuesday or Wednesday.

  3. It’s been a couple of years since I made it down to Mount Rainier National Park, and I wanted to do so before they closed the highway on the east side for the winter. They’d already closed the road up to the Sunrise ranger station, sadly, as well as much of the White River campground, due to the government shutdown, but Chinook Pass was still open, so up I went.

It’s mostly pines out that way, so where there are pops of color they *really* pop. And I’m pretty sure those are larches in the photo of Tipsoo Lake with Yakima Peak rising up behind. Their crowns are going golden, at least.

I’ll post a few more from that trip next week!
