"Mona's Delight", collected as a tune and dance on the Isle of Man in the 1930s, derived from the tune English Country dance tune "Goddesses" that dates back to at least the beginning of the 17th century.
I learnt it many years ago, one afternoon in a Whitby pub.

As a follow-up, the concert band that I play with recorded "The Seven Stars" (called "The Moon and and Seven Stars" on the CD) a few years back.
It's coupled with an Irish slide called Scattery Island.

So, "The Seven Stars" is a mid-eighteenth century country dance tune. I've never tried to play on a tin whistle before, so I though I'd have a go (practice as I mentioned before!)

I posted a recording a couple of days ago, and I ought to do more. Forcing me to practise more for one thing :-D
So, if I'm disciplined, here's a thread of some home recordings.

@elliek ... and to break out of the hopelessness/negativity , here's a human playing one of his favourite English airs (tune to the song Derwentwater's Farewell).
No eq, no reverb, just straight into the mic, mistakes and all!!
Rebel :-)

My second, and even third, Fleadh
https://coffeenow.moomop.uk/post/2026/07/fleadh-2026/
After my first Fleadh last year, this year saw a return to Birmingham to try again, this time including the required slow air. This post records how that went.

two tips for tin whistle beginners from a tin whistle beginner
1. Try "Scarborough Fair" as the first song
2. To practice quietly, blow into the blade, not mouthpiece. Everything higher than D in second octave is inaccessible that way, but it's great way of practicing tunes -

I’m practising on bamboo to make tin whistles. I’d bought a D "Generation" flute, but it was unplayable (bad luck), so I replaced the mouthpiece.
My favorite "hole calculator" is Hans Bracker's : https://music.bracker.uk/pub/html/Workshop/Whistle-Calculator.html
I use "ET" (Equal Temperament) intonation. -

Competed at the All-Britain Fleadh today. https://www.comhaltas.co.uk/allbritainfleadh
I say competed, but I was very much at the lower end of the performances.
There were some amazing musicians but also rules about recording them so here's a clip of me. I'm playing The Dingle Regatta, which I felt was just the right side of being fun but still traditional.
I should get my adjudication sheet soon 🫣 .

"There’s a timeless beauty to the music Mick O’Brien makes with Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, pitched as it is a few semitones below the rest of life, in the warm and rich world of Bb."

Ok, I found the coolest thing ever.
===Cyberpunk Bluegrass Music===
@coreysnipes suggested I look into Bluegrass in addition to my current studies of Irish Trad music as I learn how to play the Irish whistle. That makes sense as a lot of Bluegrass stems from old Irish music.
In my search for Bluegrass music with Irish whistles, I stumbled across Justin Myles Holmes' "Barlow's Jig".
And get this... after listening to an Irish whistle, a banjo, a fiddle, and other instruments playing a bluegrass jig...
...you hear a voiceover reading of "A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace (1996)" written by none other than John Perry Barlow, founding member of the @eff
John Perry Barlow. Barlow's Jig.
My worlds have collided.
Heck, I'd argue that Folk Music + Calls for Digital Independence = Solarpunk !!!
Give it a listen here (the voiceover starts at 2:45 but listen to the leadup as well):
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ck8AZA11oYQ&list=OLAK5uy_n1BAK9bfUT9iwOo8yTRVfKeYI-St_9TME&index=11 (full URL just includes the song itself and a playlist for the album. No tracking parameters)
