Ok, I found the coolest thing ever.
===Cyberpunk Bluegrass Music===
@coreysnipes suggested I look into Bluegrass in addition to my current studies of Irish Trad music as I learn how to play the Irish whistle. That makes sense as a lot of Bluegrass stems from old Irish music.
In my search for Bluegrass music with Irish whistles, I stumbled across Justin Myles Holmes' "Barlow's Jig".
And get this... after listening to an Irish whistle, a banjo, a fiddle, and other instruments playing a bluegrass jig...
...you hear a voiceover reading of "A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace (1996)" written by none other than John Perry Barlow, founding member of the @eff
John Perry Barlow. Barlow's Jig.
My worlds have collided.
Heck, I'd argue that Folk Music + Calls for Digital Independence = Solarpunk !!!
Give it a listen here (the voiceover starts at 2:45 but listen to the leadup as well):
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Ck8AZA11oYQ&list=OLAK5uy_n1BAK9bfUT9iwOo8yTRVfKeYI-St_9TME&index=11 (full URL just includes the song itself and a playlist for the album. No tracking parameters)

Just got back from the Midland Region #Fleadh. Was third of three in the grown up whistle category, but this year I qualified for the All Britain Fleadh, having actually managed to include a slow air (Aisling Gheal which one or the other competitors also played!). #TinWhistle

I had a chance to sit in on my first Irish session last weekend!!!
I didn't play as I only know one jig and I'm not able to play it very fast yet (I'm at 160BPM with the Swallowtail Jig) right now working towards 200BPM).
So I introduced myself and then sat at a closeby table and drank some beer while listening to the session. It went on for two hours and I took good notes and enjoyed myself quite thoroughly.
Cool thing happened!!!
After the session was over, folks sat with me and we got to know each other. They gave me tips and encouraged me to keep practicing.
After a bit, I pulled out my whistle and played the Swallowtail Jig, to show them where I was at. And get this!!! A fiddle player heard me start playing and pulled out his fiddle and plucked along with me!
That's the first time I've played with anyone else! It's a simple thing, but I can't express how elated I was.
They invited me to sit with them next time. Knowing full well I'm a proper beginner and learner with only a single jig under my belt. It's driven me to make sure I practice each day. I don't want to let them down and it's a wonderful thing to look forward to each month.

I've been enjoying learning the Irish Whistle / Tin Whistle. Bought a very inexpensive $15 USD whistle and been tooling on it for a couple of months learning off of free youtube videos.
I suck at it but I really enjoy it and want to continue learning.
So since I'm sticking with it, I figure I ought to take some lessons. Gonna sign up with https://oaim.ie .
Also looking at getting an "expensive" tin whistle. Looking at some between $150 to $250 USD for a single high D whistle.
As an aside, I really have enjoyed listening to the Uilleann Pipes and looked into how much a cheap set would cost...
...nope. Gonna stick with my penny whistle. 😅 (at least for now 😝)

So, I'm back home and settling down with a teapot of Earl Grey, a melodeon and some tin whistles. It's music practice time!
Incidentally, I've had this song going round in my head all day (trying not to burst into it in public):

@Lee_Holmes - Oh neat! I'll look into it, thank you!
On the topic of making fipple flutes yourself, I've seen several 3D printed ones used online. I might try my hand at that in the future as well:
-
Was going to get a Clarke Sweetone as my first tin whistle (based on online research), but the Feadog is what my local Irish store had. - So it's the one I grabbed.
I haven't played an instrument since I played trumpet as a Freshman in highschool.
So I wanted something straightforward and inexpensive. I had originally looked at playing the clarinet or oboe, but I can't put down that money (even for a rental) right now. I like the concept of fipple flutes and looked at a recorder, but the simple fingering of a tin whistle looked approachable.
I want to play the low whistle at some point as I love the sound, but I figured I'd start with a penny whistle. If this turns out to be a flash in the pan and a quickly put down ADHD passion project, then I wont be out too much money and will have had a fun experience for the time and effort spent.
If it DOES stick, though (and I'm approaching this as a lifelong project), then I'll invest a bit for a better whistle or even look at other instruments.
But this looks challenging enough, approachable enough, and just fun.
So I'll try it out.
Mary Had a Little Lamb and Twinkle Twinkle have been played. So I'm moving on to some simple folk ballads to start with.
First day. Wish me luck.

Had a super productive week: finally submitted 5 puzzles to a podcast I listen to. First time I’ve ever sent anything in, excited to see if they get featured.
Still grinding away at finger whistling (so much harder than expected. I've watched a dozen tutorials, and still can't do it!), and starting to tackle the Irish tin whistle too. Haven’t picked my first song yet. Any suggestions?

We got to play on this impressive stage in a truck at the Out of the Ordinary festival today. Not sure the whistle comes through very well, but might be for the best as I knew the tunes to varying extents. Here's one that we all know! #Cambridge #IrishTrad #TinWhistle

#Cambridge #Comhaltas, including me on #TinWhistle (🎶), will be part of The Big Session on Sunday 27th (from 10:30) at the Cambridge ‘Champagne’ Fringe Festival (running 25-27th July), at the rugby club in #Letchworth (free but with donations to Garden House Hospice)!
Full programme for the festival is at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uDJGIz6Ek4ZQc-1hlK2OAgpWl-0zNVBf.
I also recommend Frank Corr, a somewhat more skilled Comhaltas member! #FolkMusic -
Had some good fun today with Cambridge Comhaltas #busking at Market Square #Cambridge and later at the NCI building in Chesterton. The event was organized by https://www.cambuskers.org/ fundraising for the Strawberry Fair https://strawberry-fair.org.uk/SaveTheFair

I will be playing whistle in the Sunday Cambridge Comhaltas sessions (13:15 Market Square; 16:15 The NCI). Although not sure how it will go outside as I need it to be pretty windless! #TinWhistle #IrishTrad -

I found some recordings I made in 2023 of "The Foggy Dew" with tin whistle, mandolin, guitar. I decided to properly mix the track and add some bass, kantele and percussion.
*Share & Enjoy!*
You can also listen to the track on #SoundCloud and download a FLAC file from there:

For #musiciansday, I will give a short overview of my musical carreer.
I started playing #cello as a child, played classical music in an orchestra.
Went on to playing Trad. #IrishFolk in my twenties, especially #TinWhistle which I still play from time to time.
Around that time, I also started playing the #bagpipe, mainly the Great German Bagpipe or #Marktsack as we call it.
You can listen to the stuff of my old Band on https://liudon.bandcamp.com/ and Streaming.
Also, I am about to join a new band! -
