TITLE: The mysterious hum heard around the world may finally have an explanation

    URL: sciencedaily.com/releases/2026

The mysterious sound known as The Hum has been reported worldwide for decades, yet its source often remains impossible to find. Researchers tested whether people who hear it have exceptional low-frequency hearing or measurable sounds produced inside their ears, but neither explanation fit most participants. The strongest possibility is that many cases involve low-frequency tinnitus, even though the sound seems completely external.

  5. the sound of the pulsing migraine can seem like someone is dropping bags of wet sand inside my head. pulsing waves of sand woke me last night.

there is also a physical feeling of my head becoming full, kinda close to blood rushing to my head, except that i am lying down and it's not synchronized to my heartbeat (i do not get pulsile tinnitus).

typically it is matched with muscle movement and sound. this morning i felt it sync up with a bird hopping around outside my window. i have often caused it to happen by simply moving my eyes, or tilting my head to one side. my shitty neighbor idles his old truck under my bedroom window so the gas fumes did not help.

sometimes if they occur early in the evening, a couple of benedryl will clear it up by morning. but i can't take this too far into sleep or i will wake up as a zombie. that was my fear today, and i skipped it. in these cases i lie as still as possible and practice deep breathing.

i exercised a little, but i pushed my body a lot this weekend clearing a space for a stair replacement dude that isn't showing up, so i mostly just stretched.

called in sick for work, tho. trying to avoid the emotional dysfunction. i will probably sit here and finish rings of power season two. i think it probably gave me the fascist invasion dreams i had last night, but unlike many of my hero-nightmares, i survived and stayed safe. perhaps it helped me do that, too.

  9. Having tinnitus is like playing The Game. Every time you think of it, you lose. 🙃

Except that now I seem to have turned mine into a personal sound bath. For 10 years, I've gotten lost in the high pitch squeal, it was so painful! I covered the sound at all times. 🎧

Now I can affect it, turn it into a sound bath in my imagination. This alters the tone, makes the sound a temporary pleasure - instead of the monotonous, overwhelming, never-ending existence within that vibration.

I woke up maybe an hour ago. I'll begin my day job around seven hours from now.

  14. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 👂🔊 For decades, people worldwide have reported hearing a mysterious low-frequency drone, often described as a distant idling diesel engine.

Researchers studied 28 people who regularly hear this #sound, known as The Hum. Their conclusion published in PLOS ONE: It may be low-frequency #tinnitus – the #brain creating the perception of a sound that isn’t there.

    Did I miss #DroneDay?

Maybe this overlaps, but I’ve been getting more into #Drone music as my #tinnitus increases

Harmonizing with / obscuring the constant tones in my head

While not reflecting how I can’t hear as much of the frequency range of other music I like

What with all the damage from poor ear protection in too-high volume clubs in the 90s–00s

If you think this stuff is boring, wear your earplugs today

  20. Need to go and do some shopping, but the #tinnitus is out of control today, particularly the #pulsatiletinnitus that I can barely move.

    So very over it.

  22. 😖 I don't like when my pulsatile tinnitus kicks in because listening to my heartbeat is unsettling. :woozy_heart:

I can't help thinking I hope when I die I won't hear my heart stop

    Great article

This bit could help if it were more well known:

⚠️ 👂🏽 Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) causes severe hearing loss and deafness (usually in one ear), tinnitus and sensitivity to sound

The damage is normally permanent unless treated with steroid injections at a hospital as soon as possible 👂🏽

The only preventable hearing-loss with a countdown I’ve ever heard of ⏰

  30. RE: hachyderm.io/@mattly/116569227

Anyone else having #tinnitus around 18kHz? Mine is 9kHz, I never knew it could be as high as @mattly is seeing.

  31. I wanted to ask the Fediverse, has anyone here dealt with pulsative tinnitus? I’ve had it off and on for two months, not severe, only when I am sleeping at certain points. My ear doc has run hearing tests and said that I could get an MRI if I would like. Maybe it’s time to do so, and also get to know a cardiologist just because I’m not a kid anymore.

He thinks I may have otosclerosis, which that doesn’t worry me. But it’s the same ear.

I don’t have high blood pressure, quite the opposite.

    Anyway, I’m a little nervous. Thank you. #fediask #tinnitus

  33. Public Service Announcement. If you enjoy music, spend most of your time at your computer and is maybe is dealing with tinnitus and hearing loss...

A proper set of desktop speakers might be the best gift for your self in decades. It was for me 🕺

Tinnitus isn't going anywhere. But with proper audio, I'm able to treat it like that chatty guy at a concert and almost tune him out.

    Thank you, musicians ❤️

  35. I need to reconsider my music system. I can't play music because the forking internet is down. I do NOT accept such a dependency.

I need music to drown out the #tinnitus.

  37. The #tinnitus I've had since a gig last autumn isn't so bad. Mostly I don't think about it at all. But it's really noticeable when I wake up. A thin but very loud treble beep, poor treble hearing on my right ear. It soon recedes when I get up.
