There is little more frustrating in technology than the phrase "I fixed the thing which randomly broke by restarting all the bits over and over until it worked."
And yet, here we are.
-
I cracked the palm rest on the ancient t400 I've been tinkering on today. I think I may just sticker it to death and call it "repaired enough" since I don't actually intend to type on it much.
I am I opened it up, as the WiFi is completely different than expected. Saved futureMe a few headaches.
Okay, wifi first, stickers second.

New achievement unlocked:
I'm now testing my own OpenBSD ports for upgrade-related explosions. So far, so good.
Real Talk:
I have no idea what I'm doing, aside from leveling up my impostor syndrome in an area that has no direct impact on my life other than "thing works, yay!"

Currently reading enough to get my bearings on what was previously a big inscrutable box marked ports magic.
We'll see how far I get.

Observation from today's #TinkeringFootgunFunTime
More network testing should involve blasting Fatboy Slim across a wireguard tunnel.

After much swearing, our #Nextcloud server is vertical again!
There's no place like 127.0.0.1...which is interesting, because apparently redis needed it specified on this network, as opposed to accepting 'localhost' like before.
Bewildering, frustrating, and for the moment, now fixed and off my to-do list.
Still need to upgrade the machine, but for the moment, enjoying getting all of our devices talking to each other again.

Add another completely uneventful #OpenBSD upgrade to the list. Laptop's up and running 7.4 now.
-
Thanks to my geekiest friends, it looks like there's a shiny new #OpenBSD release to enjoy. Congrats on all the work to make it happen!
It may be a minute before I get to upgrade all the things though, as I am only vaguely certain which box I packed our server into before the move. :)

Tonight's #TinkeringFootgunFunTime was bolting just enough hardware and software together to impersonate a working router.
Frankly, the configuration is lousy and hacked together.
The hardware itself is questionable, and currently includes pieces borrowed from friends until my own tools arrive in a week.
Yet, for all of this spaghetti, I'm now posting on the internet from #ThisOldClownHouse without having to resort to a mobile hotspot.
It's not just good...for tonight, it's good enough. :)

It would appear that, thanks in part to many helpful opinions here, I will have the hardware necessary to get basic networking online (nearly) on arrival to the new and definitely improved clown HQ.
The nerd in me is excited to get to build some of this stuff by hand.
The next (related) project, which I can't really dig into until I'm on site, is figuring out what combination of wires and wireless (WIFI) will most reduce my swearing.

That bubbly, optimism-laden moment wherein you register a new domain name for a secret project that's going to be a lot less secret in the relatively near future.

I found a mold from an old sculpture I made decades ago. It looks like it has a tear in it, but I *think* I can patch it long enough to get a casting off of it.
I scrounged up some hydrocal, and I'm about to either make a mess, or a bit of nostalgia. :)

I think I need to consider updating my favorite geeky hashtag, #TechnicalJiggeryPokery to #TinkeringFootgunFunTime.
