How is it only lunchtime? It feels like it should at least be April by now! 🤔

🐈⬛ Marvin sips tea and contemplates time crystals ☕
Marvin pauses mid-sip of tea.
“So… these aren’t clocks,” he observes, “and they aren’t crystals in the usual sense either.”
What’s interesting about the new time crystal results isn’t that time itself pulses, but that order can live in a system’s behaviour rather than its shape.
In these systems, nothing static repeats in space. Instead, the state of the system settles into a rhythm — a stable pattern in time — even while energy is flowing in and out.
The real twist (and Marvin’s favourite part):
one of the phases only exists because quantum correlations are allowed to organise globally.
When you average them away, the order disappears. When you let them interact, the rhythm appears.
Marvin nods.
“Turns out fluctuations aren’t always the problem,” he says.
“Sometimes they’re how the system negotiates agreement.”

…"#TimeCrystals are only 12 years old as a concept, and … may not exist in nature anywhere in the universe. This example of a many-body state happens when multiple #atoms are stimulated by a #laser … and settled into an #asymmetrical lower state in terms of time. They can, theoretically, keep moving #forever"…

Apparently scientists have been making time crystals for a few years now.
A regular crystal occurs when structures of atoms repeat across space. A time crystal occurs when atoms (or smaller particles) form structures that repeat across time.
This means that you have particles flipping back and forth between two states over time, but without any increase or decrease of energy in the system. It seems to violate the second law of thermodynamics.
Time crystals were first proposed in 2012, so making them seems like a pretty swift development.
There are no applications as of yet, since these crystals "melt" immediately outside lab conditions. But they could possibly someday be used to enhance memory storage for quantum computers.
I don't really understand it, but it sounds cool as fuck. #TimeCrystals #science #Quantum #physics

Ever since I read an article about time crystals yesterday, I'm utterly confused. How can structures of atoms "repeat in time" instead of repeating in space[time]? WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
But here's the bliss of ignorance: it gave me really cool ideas for my books. And if they're completely bonkers, I'll be looooong dead before anyone has proven it.
Thanks @Thoreau, who pointed me to that particular rabbit hole.
