I study nuclear science
I love my classes
I got a crazy teacher,
He wears dark glasses
Things are going great
They're only getting better
I'm doing all right
Getting good grades
The future's so bright
I gotta wear BEIGE!!! -

Pat MacDonald and The Essentials, Essentialist Propaganda, 1983 on Counter-Pop
Pat MacDonald would go on to be one half of Timbuk 3 with his wife Barbara Kooyman, listed here as Barbara K. MacDonald. “Too Much Sex (Not Enough Affection” from this EP also was later on Eden Alley in 1988.
Pat MacDonald and The Essentials put out one full length album and this EP, which was recorded in Chicago. (The MacDonalds formed Timbuk 3 in Madison Wisconsin before relocating to Austin).
I was super excited to find my copy at Antone’s Records in Austin TX – so far as I know (or discogs knows) there’s only been one pressing.

Listening to melancholy acoustic covers of 80s and 90s tune on an overcast Saturday. Lots of things I could be doing, but none of them feel particularly compelling.
Talking on telephones
Cross time zones
Paying the futility bill
Praying for rain
Punching clocks
Changing the world like I change my socks -
The song tells the story of a young, nuclear scientist dreaming about his rich future in the impending nuclear holocaust during the height of the Cold War era. Unfortunately, the song became unironically popular as a graduation/prom song.

“The Future’s So Bright” by Timbuk 3🇺🇸 (1986) (https://youtu.be/8qrriKcwvlY?si=LGXUu31p6FfyNiY4)/(Strobe Free version: https://youtu.be/tUOSpWkWmPk?si=6dYYjk-3ZQ8ImdKl) was an Austin, Texas based new wave band headed up by then husband-and-wife team Pat MacDonald and Barbara Kooyman. The band broke up in 1995 when the couple divorced (understandable).

Timbuk 3, Eden Alley, 1988 on I.R.S. Records
Timbuk 3 was the stage name for the duo of Pat MacDonald and Barbara K. MacDonald (nee Barbara Kooyman, aka Barbara K), as it evolved out of Pat MacDonald & The Essentials. They formed in Madison Wisconsin (later relocating to Austin Texas) and put out six albums, of which this was their second.
I love their songwriting: clever, punny, […]

CW: "The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades" - Timbuk3
#AprilAcrossAmerica does #Wisconsin.
Remember #Timbuk3? Pat and Barbara MacDonald recorded for six years, and had exactly one moment of cool. Early 1987 had "The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades", an anti-nuclear anthem disguised as optimism for the future.
Make that two moments of cool - they turned down a million dollars to advertise sunglasses.
