Morning update for September 1 from Los Padres National Forest on Facebook:
Size: 25,190 acres
Containment: 22%Firefighters on the Timber Fire were aided by overnight humidity recovery near 90% which helped keep fire behavior moderated.
Night crews focused on mop up and active patrol along the Highway 1 corridor, specifically working to extinguish any lingering heat that could threaten the road or structures in the Camp Pfieffer area. To the east, humidity remained as low as 5% at elevations around Chews Ridge and highlights the potential for continued fire spread as conditions allow.
With that potential in mind, firefighters along the northwest corner of the perimeter are focusing on building containment around a slop over from several days ago near Manuel Peak.
Along the northern and eastern edges of the fire, hand crews and heavy equipment are being utilized to connect pieces of completed dozer line from Bixby Mountain to Skinner Ridge, east toward Haystack and from Chews Ridge east then south toward Arroyo Seco.
Weather: An early season trough of low pressure will bring unseasonably cool temperatures and higher humidity airmass over the Timber and Plaskett Fire tomorrow. This will be one of the coolest days since the fire started with highs mainly in the 60s and struggling to warm into the 70s, even for interior portions of the fire.
General winds will continue to be onshore and from the West with gusts to around 15 mph for the exposed ridges along the Coast Ridge Trail. Lower elevations below 2000 feet will continue to see good humidity values that will help with mop-up operations.
The air aloft should be cool enough to erode the marine inversion layer with cooler temperatures for the highest elevations above 3.000 feet. Skies will be partly cloudy tonight as a weak frontal boundary passes through. The front may generate some very light showers or drizzle overnight into Wednesday morning, especially around Big Sur and the Pfeiffer Camp but amounts would be a few hundredths at most.

From CAL FIRE BEU / CAL TRANS District 5 on FB: Heads up travelers through the Big Sur area. A one-day maintenance project is happening tomorrow along Highway 1, helping us keep the roadway safe and flowing smoothly. Work will take place at Torre Canyon where crews will be removing rock piles left from recent Timber Fire operations. This work will clear pullouts, restores proper drainage, and reduces the chance of rocks reaching the travel lane. Expect 10–15 minute delays between 9 a.m.–3 p.m.

From County of Monterey, CALTrans Dist 5 on FB: A quick reminder for travelers as we approach the weekend. A 10-mile stretch of Highway 1 in Big Sur remains closed to support Timber Fire operations. From 2 miles north of Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park to the Big Sur Bakery. Please avoid unnecessary travel in the area and use US 101 as an alternate route. We appreciate the hard work of first responders and stand with the Big Sur community during this challenging time.

Current Situation: Favorable weather conditions significantly improved visibility on the west side of the Timber Fire today, allowing crews to conduct a visual assessment of the area.
There was increased fire activity, and clear conditions allowed air and ground resources to engage. Fire crews reinforced retardant lines above structures along Partington Road, extending north toward Ventana to fortify primary containment and structure defense operations.
On the northern flank, the fire experienced movement across the Pine Ridge Trail system toward the Big Sur River. Heavy helicopters provided critical aerial support, targeting active hotspots and reinforcing indirect containment lines.
Along the eastern perimeter, the fire continues a slow, backing movement downhill toward the drainage. Ground crews are constructing a combination of direct and indirect containment lines where accessible. Extreme, rugged terrain continues to limit access along the eastern edge; however, crews are safely maneuvering through the area, seizing opportunities to build line while actively monitoring fire behavior.
Weather: The marine layer is expected to continue covering the area through Saturday in the lower elevations. A warming and drying trend is forecasted above the marine layer, leading to rising temperatures, lowering humidity, and increasing fire activity above the marine layer.
Closures: Highway 1 remains closed for public and firefighter safety. The northern closure is at mile marker 45.1 near the Big Sur Bakery, and the southern closure is near mile marker 37 at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.

Update from Los Padres NF:Current Situation:
The heavy marine layer moderated fire activity, and the fire is currently hung up above the houses on the east side of Highway 1. Crews continue to create containment line behind houses where possible and remain on scene at each structure. They are also continuing to work on a continuous line behind the houses. Some of this is complete, but steep drainages make this work very difficult, especially without the assistance of aircraft which has been severely limited by fog.
In addition, a dozer line is being constructed along Coast Ridge Road south from De Angulo Canyon southwest toward Highway 1 for use as a contingency line should it become necessary.
To the north, the fire has crossed the Pine Ridge Trail system and is backing towards the Big Sur River. Contingency lines are in place should it cross the river. Cooler, wetter conditions also helped lessen fire activity on the east side of the fire. The fire has crossed Longwood Creek and is currently on Olmstead Mountain.
Weather:
A deep marine layer has moved in and will dominate the Highway 1 corridor in the area the next few days. Expect warmer and drier conditions by the weekend.Road Closures:
Highway 1 remains closed for public and firefighter safety. The northern closure is at mile marker 45.1 near the Big Sur Bakery, and the southern closure is near mile marker 37 at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.Cole Euken, Manager of Real-Time Operations

The fire is 4,044.7 acres per the perimeter uploaded to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC), which is visible on the Watch Duty map under the Active Fire Perimeters map layer.Update per the Los Padres National Forest on Facebook:
Current Situation: Cooler temperatures and high humidity mitigated temperatures and fire activity in some areas of the Timber Fire today, allowing crews a window to get good work done. However, the fire has been burning for several days in heavy vegetation, and this rain event will not fully extinguish the fire. Erratic winds from thunderstorm activity impacted the fire, and firefighters were pulled off assignments for their safety briefly this afternoon while a large thunder cell passed over the area. The fire has burned almost to Highway 1 at Grimes Canyon. It continues to back slowly towards structures along Highway 1 between Ventana and Partington Ridge Road. Firefighters continue to prioritize structure defense in those areas.
Despite the heavy cloud cover at lower elevations, the higher elevations and eastern side of the fire remained clear, and the fire was still active. Crews are looking for new opportunities to suppress the fire directly along its active edge. The fire has progressed to the southeast over Logwood Creek. The use of aircraft was hampered for much of the day due to compromised visibility and inclement weather, but clearing skies late in the day allowed for helicopters to resume work on the top and east side of the fire.Weather: Thunderstorm/shower activity is expected to taper off overnight as any lingering storms move eastward. A heavy marine layer is anticipated to settle in lower elevations overnight, with partial clearing anticipated by tomorrow afternoon. Clear skies and mild temperatures are anticipated in elevations over 2000’ ASL in advance of much warmer temperatures arriving this weekend.
