  1. NZ is good at training medical professionals but not good at retaining them. So we rely on overseas trained doctors especially to fill the need.
My home town is attracting some top line professionals for our health services.
It's a nice place to live.

When the small South Island town of Timaru and its cluster of US doctors hit the front page of the Wall Street Journal last week, it highlighted New Zealand's dependence on overseas doctors, particularly in rural and regional parts of the country.

  2. CW: Hallucinated Interruptions - AI in Timaru

It's surprising how many people in Timaru rely on AI in their daily lives.

People using Google's Gemini AI to search for "Timaru Hospital" received the correct result with contact details. But those searching for "Timaru Hospital phone number" were offered a direct line to a local café called Sopheze, 15-20 times a day for several weeks.

Naturally Google didn't respond until media got involved.

  3. A Sovereign Citizen builds a swimming pool... and you'll never believe what happens next!

In Timaru court Simon Richardt claimed he was "Simon in the living" -- the judge said he was not there to play “Simon says”. And the judge's final comment is a beaut.

"Ignorance of the law is not a defence and neither is ignorance in general.”

    Fined $18,000.

    Touché!

  4. CW: Timaru Hospital Victory

    VICTORY!
Health NZ's decision not to proceed with a proposed merger of South Canterbury's clinical leadership with Southern DHB, is a victory for local healthcare.
A petition made change with 1,719 supporters!
Local National MP's are taking the credit but it was absolutely the people who stood up and said NO!

So we must rename tomorrow's gathering the ‘CELEBRATION’. Our community’s voice was heard.

  5. Health NZ have plans to shift a number of management roles away from Timaru. I joined the protest against this on Saturday.
I personally have had to use the services of different departments in our hospital. The last was a two night stay for treatment for a cat bite! Probably rather trivial to the needs of other patients. The staff were exceptional.
We won't stand for anything less.

  6. CW: Hospital

A substantial number of Timaru citizens stood opposite their hospital this morning and voiced their unity in keeping all management of the hospital in local hands. Organized by a local concerned about the rumblings of losing some vital management to Dunedin, speakers included a surgeon that sees this move as the first to diminish the capabilities and services the hospital offers to our community.
Thanks to all that have taken a stand. There will probably be more to stand up for.

  7. If the government was smart after yesterdays announcement by Alliance shutting down Smithfield they'd start a small team at WINZ in #Timaru in conjunction with local businesses and employment agencies on Monday and tell workers to register with it so the balls rolling on getting these people into other jobs before the closure or look at helping people relocate for employment they need to front foot this.

  8. Absolutely guted hearing today's news from #Timaru half my job was going into that plant in the afternoon its not just the workers who are getting laid of at the actual plant it's all the contractors down the lines as well I reckon it's going to be closer to 1000 people who are looking at redundancy come December.

  10. Should probably say to I'm ending my 2 year stint in #Timaru and heading back to #christchruch was a absolute amazing two years #Timaru thank you for having me.

  11. And if you think I'm talking out my arse when it comes to #Timaru and Rooney I've seen multiple examples of one site getting shut down for something and Rooney doing the same thing and they do nothing because the local government is scared of him.

It's like the alliance site I know for a fact that entire site is riddled with aspestos i promise you the local government will completely ignore were he dumps it when he bulldozes it.

  12. By the way the alliance shut down news in #Timaru is really about one man and thats Rooney he pretty much owns Timaru he brought that land and has land banked most of Timaru and believe me when I say this living here for two years he's a law until himself and nobody's bothered to check him.

Until the Timaru community and local government stand up to him he's actually going to kill Timaru.

  13. Glad to see scaffolders being recognised.
Our basilica needed it's copper roof replaced and needed to be fully covered for the job. So a tent was erected above it.

  15. CW: Theatre or climate resilience

Timaru Theatre Royal is old and disused.
Upgrade has escalated from about $14m to more than $50m with no guarantee this amount won’t continue to grow.
This uses up the entire 10-year budget for council’s culture and heritage investments, leaving no funding for 10 years for projects that represent our culturally diverse communities.
And to make it harder to swallow no LTP funding, over 10 years, to take action on climate change.

  19. After watching the container ship hitting the Baltimore bridge as someone who lives with a view of the port here in #timaru suddenly I have way more respect and admiration for the guys & girls who man our tugs & pilot boat especially this Port, we have a super container ship come here every so often and boy there's no room for error turning that thing in the port mad respect.
