A truly immersive experience, Undertow couples the tiki staples with modern effects like video portholes showing the progress of the ship through various scenes, changing by the season. Each menu refresh comes with a new chapter, literally, as the narrative (which is printed in the menu) advances, the "external" scenery changes, and the drinks tie in to story details. There's no sports, the speakers play Martin Denny and other exotica, and an occasional thunderstorm interrupts the lighting and audio to really sell the idea that you're in the deck of a ship. Even little details, like slightly angled walls, work to illustrate that this is a departure from the strip mall building that you see from the outside.
And then there are the drinks. High quality and sometimes even hard to find spirits are used and custom syrups, tinctures, and infusions find their way into all of the drinks. It's not rare to smell a cinnamon stick being torched, or see a smoking gun add an additional element to a drink as it goes out. The drinks are split into broad categories such as "the classics", "sours", and "stirred", which really invite the less knowledgeable patron to discuss what they should get with their bartender. Couple that with the small number of seats and cozy accommodations, and you end up with a really intimate setting.
If it's not clear, I love this place. It's the most immersive tiki bar I've been to, and it does a stellar job of capturing that feeling of being transported somewhere else that I like to believe was the original draw to tiki bars in their heyday.
