  1. Wow commute times in NYC are solidly twice per year what they are in any other major city. I would take an hour on a train though over half that in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Created in #rstats using @[email protected]'s #tidycensus

  2. Useful webinar "Analyzing Data from the 2023 American Community Survey in R" by Kyle Walker just finished. Think recordings will be available later.

Using {tidycensus} for working with USA census data. Has a nice worked example of adding error bars to a plot to show margin of error and polishing the visuals. And generally mapping the census data and using microdata.

  8. Kyle Walker: “This year, I’ll once again be hosting a webinar series with the University of Michigan’s Social Science Data Analysis Network (SSDAN)! This year’s series is titled Analyzing 2020 Census and 2022 ACS Data with R. The webinar series will take place this February and March and is completely free to attend. 10. In July and August, I turned some unpublished #tidycensus helper functions into the {getACS} package elipousson.github.io/getACS/

More than any other package from the last year, I would love to see this one get more use and hear feedback on potential improvements. #RStats

I showcased this package in a presentation I delivered in August at the statewide GIS conference elipousson.github.io/presentat

  16. Guys I’m just learning how to use the tidycensus package. I was wondering if anyone has a script or a blog post on how to estimate population density for census blocks?

  22. A median household income of Maryland by population. This helped me realise I need to whine for my brain to find solutions to problems? 🤔 After I complained about non-aligning plots, I figured out a workaround.

  24. Rendered this median household income map of Wisconsin by census tract before I thought of doing it by population. In keeping with never wasting computational cycles, here it is!

Should I find a different palette? This looks too similar to election map colours, no?

  26. I wrote a rough vignette for my {getACS} R package comparing my crosswalk functions to the interpolation function in #tidycensus elipousson.github.io/getACS/ar
    #RStats

  27. I also spent some time this afternoon incorporating the option to calculate weighted means instead of weighted sums into use_area_xwalk: elipousson.github.io/getACS/re

This is basically essential for aggregating median values (which I discovered after creating some bad data that I now need to correct).

That feature is based directly on the tidycensus interpolate_pw function walker-data.com/tidycensus/ref

  28. Stayed up late last night and added a handy function for collapsing ACS variables into groups elipousson.github.io/getACS/re

Suggestions or feedback on the {getACS} package are welcome! I've been spending too much time on it the last couple weeks but I'm really excited about the potential.

  29. Finally found some time to play with the beta, so here's my first attempt—a map showing median household income by county across the conterminous USA. Does it need to be 3D? No. Is it more fun in 3D? Most assuredly yes. 😋

  31. Completely missed the addition of a dedicated function for population-weighted interpolation to the #tidycensus package back in September walker-data.com/tidycensus/ref

  32. Working on a new package {getACS} with a lot of potential (IMHO) to make it even easier to work with data from #tidycensus
    elipousson.github.io/getACS/

Per usual, I'm procrastinating on prepping for my fall course + a presentation next week by falling down a R package development rabbit hole. Let me know what you think if you try it! #RStats

  33. I'm super excited that later today at 10:30 Eastern Time I'll be speaking at the Data+Donuts series at Harvard Kennedy School about the Public Health Disparities Geocoding Project 2.0.

Among other things, I'll talk a little bit about the role the #tidycensus package and GIS software in R like #sf can serve in analyzing data to advance health justice.
