super knifey thought: a #qiye #tianyake AU where jby dies in the fight for the capital. wu xi returns to nanjiang depressed but still takes up his role as great shaman out of responsibility. tyk proceeds like in canon. wenzhou ask wu xi for help with zzs's condition (iirc wu xi feels indebt to zzs in canon for helping to get jby out of qing, in this version of events he asks zzs to tell stories of jby as payment because wu xi can't remember his voice or face anymore). but then wkx is too gravely injured in the fight for fengya. wu xi can't help him anymore and he dies. wu xi and zzs have only each other left.

zzs goes back to nanjiang with wu xi but he builds himself a hut just outside its territory. idk. to be alone. to be close enough. to not show his suffering face to wu xi all the time.

wu xi still wants to heal zzs but he doesn't think he can without wkx around to motivate and support zzs during his recovery. it's okay, they still have a few months left before it is too late. in the meantime, they have comfort sex. because what else would good friends do?

they become emotionally dependent on each other because zzs regularly reminds wu xi what jby looked like and wu xi is the only one who makes zzs not feel as empty all the time.

but time is running out. wu xi doesn't want to pressure zzs into something he doesn't want. zzs doesn't want to leave wu xi behind like jby did. zzs ignores what wu xi says to make him feel unpressured, that he has been living alone ever since jby died and that he's learned to accept it. the lies aren't fooling zzs who can clearly see that wu xi is miserable. but zzs still isn't sure wu xi and life in nanjiang is enough to make him want to live again.

in the end, he leaves it up to wu xi and gives himself into the shaman's capable hands. if da wu thinks they have enough, enough for them both to continue living, then he shall try.
