"Three Hong Kong activists who organised annual vigils commemorating Beijing's 1989 crackdown on #TiananmenSquare protests have been handed prison sentences of up to seven years.
"Two of the defendants - Lee Cheuk-yan, 69, and Chow Hang-tung, 41 - were convicted last month of inciting others to subvert state power, under the city's controversial national security law.
"A third defendant, Albert Ho, 74, had pleaded guilty in January.
"For years, Hong Kong was one of the only places in Chinese territory where people could hold gatherings to mark the Tiananmen Square crackdown - a topic that is highly sensitive and heavily censored in mainland #China.
"These gatherings were banned by Hong Kong's authorities in 2020, citing Covid-19 policies, but never resumed. That same year, the national security law, which makes illegal a wider range of dissenting acts, officially came into force.
Authorities say the law is necessary to maintain stability, but critics argue it has eroded Hong Kong's autonomy and created a climate of fear."Lee, Chow and Ho were charged in 2021. They faced up to 10 years in prison after their conviction.
"On Friday, the court sentenced Lee to seven years in prison, while Chow was handed seven years and three months. Ho, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to five years in prison.
"According to a court summary in August, Lee and Chow had 'incited other persons to organise, plan, commit or participate in acts by unlawful means with a view to subverting the state power', according to a summary on Friday.
"Chow told the court in May the law itself was on trial.
"Speaking to the BBC before her arrest in 2022, Chow said she was 'prepared to be arrested' and 'willing to pay the price for fighting for democracy'."

The analysis of previously unseen images obtained by “Le Monde” and leading testimonies provide a better understanding of how the Chinese regime gradually shifted to the violent repression of the student demonstrations in the spring of 1989.
Spring 1989, Tiananmen Square. At the heart of the student demonstrations, a young expatriate, Nathalie Trouveroy, films the Beijing protesters, their slogans, their enthusiasm and their fear with her Hi8 video camera. These images, which remained in a family setting for a long time, are unpublished archives obtained by Le Monde.
Her husband, Guy Trouveroy, was then a political adviser at the Belgian Embassy in Beijing. For seven weeks, the couple were privileged witnesses to the regime’s hesitation, torn between dialogue, obstruction and repression of the demonstrators. When the movement turns in favour of democratic measures, the communist government sends tanks against the population. On the night of 3-4 June 1989, the massacre took place. The repression would spread throughout China.
Since then, the Chinese authorities have been trying to erase Tiananmen from the collective memory. But, thirty-eight years later, Nathalie Trouveroy’s never-before-seen video and photo archives have come to light. With these family images, the Trouveroy couple intend to preserve the memory of the victims of the bloody repression of the Tiananmen movement.

last year I did a deep dive about the #tiananmen square after reading an offhand comment how its all a lie and i wanted to counter since where i live the center square was named to honor it.
the only evidence i could find was the guy sending the cable to the world admitting that he never actually witnessed it himself. and that all the embassies at the time had a visit from someone telling them about the horrors but no one ever actually saw anything.
there is absolute no proof of the massacre?

Le 4 juin, jour anniversaire de l’écrasement du mouvement démocratique chinois en 1989, est une date extrêmement sensible en Chine continentale, où tout ce qui peut s’y rapporter est soigneusement censuré. À Hong Kong, où cette flamme a été portée pendant trente ans, l’événement est également devenu tabou dans la presse.
Le silence de la presse est éloquent. L’essentiel des médias de Hong Kong, comme les quotidiens South China Morning Post et Ming Pao, ou la RTHK, l’audiovisuel public du territoire, observent une stricte retenue en cette journée du 4 juin, date anniversaire du massacre des manifestants de la place Tian’anmen par les chars chinois à Pékin en 1989.
Alors que ces mêmes organes de la presse hongkongaise, à l’image de la société civile, ont entretenu la flamme du mouvement démocratique réprimé dans le sang pendant plus de trente ans, ne reste plus aujourd’hui que Hong Kong Free Press (HKFP) pour porter une voix un tant soit peu dissidente.
