Angesichts der ziemlich sicheren politischen Entwicklungen mit Bundestagswahl und so, wünsche ich mir irgendwie ein stabiles, flauschiges, hilfreiches Untergrundnetzwerk von "TIAN-Logen", die auffangen, empowern, solidarisch helfen, Wissen sammeln, bewahren und verbreiten, und aus denen kreative, unterstützende und konstruktive Aktivitäten hervorgehen.
Ja, ich befürchte dystopische Entwicklung. Aber ich bin nicht gewillt, auch in dystopische Denke zu verfallen.

Reading "This Place Is Still Beautiful" [2022] by Xixi #Tian, it's #YAFiction and really good!!
"People are usually amazed at how quickly and easily I can get things done, but the reality is, people generally underestimate the power of just being assertive and persistent."
Two sisters that are very different, Tian is really good in letting this show but also allowing the reader to see how each of both feels INSIDE, which is quite different from the other's perception.

In Kanada verursacht Starkregen regelmäßig Massensterben bei Lachsen. Warum? Weil Regen Reifabrieb in Fluss und Meer spült. Bei Starkregen halt in so hoher Konzentration, dass es tödlich ist. Nur für Lachse untersucht, da nur sie Geldwert haben. Aber Reifabrieb tötet auch andere Pflanzen und Tiere.Das Paper liest sich übrigens wie der Bericht einer forensischen Morduntersuchung 😁 2 Jahre Umwege, falsches Abbiegen und Sackgassen, bis die Forscher 6PPD-quinone in Reifabrieb als Mordwerkzeug identifizierten, um dann die für Lachse tödliche Menge mit der in Flüssen nach Starkregen zu vergleichen. Bingo.

Wow! The murderer is identified. What a crime story!
Cars are bad for us. Tire rub-off is bad for us. Tire rub-off flushed into rivers during storms regularly kills 90% of coho salmon in Canada. 😱
But which compound is the actual murder weapon? 💀tldr: a product called 6PPD is added to tire rubber. It is "designed to diffuse to tire rubber surfaces, rapidly scavenge ground-level atmospheric ozone and other reactive oxidant species, and form protective films to prevent ozone-mediated oxidation of structurally important rubber elastomers".
But 6PPD is ofc also rubbed off the tire. So then it reacts with near-ground ozone (which is plentiful thanks to combustion engines, I think). By this process it becomes 6PPD--quinone, up to now an environmental unknown, undocumented, un-researched.
And it is this 6PPD--quinone that kills the salmon when a rain storm washes streets clean and the 6PPD--quinone concentration in the water rises to lethal levels.
The authors describe in detail their 2.5 years of working like true detectives. From dead ends over wrong turns to enlightenment... Fun read for nerds – or people who see movie-like scenes when reading science papers. 😁

#Salmon has economic importance. Hence the regular mass deaths were observed. Hence the meticulous detectoring applied.
Open question: what do we think, how many other species in water or soil are exposed to lethal tire rub-off? And what is their individual level for lethal concentration, and which tire chemical does them in?
