Both pictures show the same thing, one is the whole pulse and one just the rising edge of a pulse.
This puls is for firing a #power #thyristor, which has a reverse voltage of over 1000 V and can conduct a few thousand amps (not sure how much exactly, didn't check the data sheet, but for sure 2kA, but I guess up to 4kA.
So this pulse had to be of a specific shape, the rise must be fast, the width must not be so wide. This it to ensure the thyristors in one brach (4 pcs) start conducting at the same time, otherwise the thyristor can get damaged by the voltage. This is commonly, at least in the area I work in, referred to as a church shaped pulse.
