Formed by Genesis P-Orridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Chris Carter and Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson, Throbbing Gristle, or often shortened to T.G., emerged from the radical performance-art collective COUM Transmissions during the 1970s. Rejecting traditional rock music, they used tape loops, primitive electronics and manipulated noise to explore violence, control and the psychological unease of modern industrial life.
In 1976, they founded Industrial Records and adopted the slogan “Industrial Music for Industrial People.” From this came the name of an entirely new genre. Industrial music would later influence countless electronic and alternative artists, but few would match the unsettling ambiguity of the band that created it. T.G. were musicians, performance artists and deliberate provocateurs. Their work challenged the boundary between art and obscenity, forcing audiences to confront images and ideas they would rather ignore.
