From the "Mind's I" to the "Strange Loop," this episode challenges you to see yourself not as a collection of cells, but as a self-reinforcing pattern of information that has mistakenly concluded it is a solid 'thing'.#consciousness

Description: In this provocative 40-minute deep dive, we deconstruct the "bio-chauvinistic" bias that insists consciousness is a monopoly of biological cells. Using the "Domino Logic" thought experiment, we explore the paradox of downward causality—how abstract mathematical truths and high-level desires can physically dictate the behavior of microscopic atoms.#consciousness

Are You the Carbon or the Pattern?
In this 55-minute podcast, we explore Douglas Hofstadter and Daniel Dennett’s The Mind’s I. We are moving beyond simple biology to ask the ultimate question: Are you the physical atoms (the Carbon), or are you the information moving through them (the Pattern)?

A Quick Look at 'The Mind’s Eye'
Intro
"Behind your eyes, there is a feeling of a solid, continuous 'you'—the pilot steering the ship. But what if that feeling is actually a beautiful, complex illusion? In this quick 8-minute exploration of the classic text The Mind’s Eye by Douglas Hofstadter and Daniel Dennett(see ALT txt)

Over the past year, I’ve been writing a series of thought experiments on wave dynamics, perception, and anomalous phenomena.
They’re not scientific papers - they’re invitations to think sideways. Curious? Good! 👇

Maybe @Dockers opted for the misspelled "TruTemp" #branding because #philosophy had already taken "Truetemp".
Aside: I recently published new data about #thoughtExperiments like Truetemp:

Discovered via Calishat Snaps: Monkeys.zip. From the About page: “Monkeys.zip, aka The Monkey Project, is a live, crowdsourced experiment based on the Infinite Monkey Theorem. If you haven’t heard of the Infinite Monkey Theorem, it goes something like this: Infinite Monkeys on Infinite Typewriters will eventually write all the works of Shakespeare. It’s a thought experiment that’s been […]

"Why Time Travel is Impossible"
by RealLifeLorePresents brief descriptions of the classic #Grandfather & #Bootstrap #Paradoxes.
Such #thoughtexperiments give rise to apparently illogical scenarios, including the #HitlerParadox, also mentioned. Although, none absolutely nullifies all possibility of #interdimensional transport. #Video is ~ 7 mins long with a sponsored ad beginning at ~ 6 mins (and 12k+ comments!) -
A lemmy discussion about some GTA exec wanting to price games based on per hour value got me thinking, what is the per-hour value you are willing to pay for entertainment?
I guess there could be a consensus in terms of percentage of income but is there a specific dollar-value that can be calculated as a baseline?

I am so sad to hear about Þis.
1) almost makes me want to do Þis to some of the MegaChurches. but someÞing tells me Þe response would be a bit different between Þe two.Not Þat I ever would, as an experiment...
and I know 2 wrongs don't make a right.

So this is my daily "skim now, read later" This paper hits at the heart of something I have been thinking a lot about in and outside the lab. As someone who doesn't do MD but spends a lot of time doing #thoughtexperiments and #biochemistry there is no simple biochemical way to tackle some questions currently and MD really is the way. Looking forward to diving DEEP into this one.

Chris is a creator from Estonia. I found him posting interesting videos on AI and philosophy in Facebook groups. I'm amazed at how much we agree on. Originally this video was meant to be an introduction. There were no plans to post, but we both enjoyed the conversation so much. Topics include AGI, AI alignment, the singularity, the experience machine, complexity, and more.

If a dead planet orbits a black dwarf whilst tidally locked in an utterly dark Universe, does time exist?
Is the observer necessary?

Does #yunohost scale?
Say I were to start a mastodon instance alongside some other service, pixelfed for instance. Say aspirations were to have thousands of users. Would it be wise to have yunohost on a VPS and let it handle the services and backups? Would it scale to so many users?
I think it's a dumb question, as I suspect yunohost is only about management, the apps themselves need to scale… But not sure about this!
