  4. So out of the events, which would I recommend? They're both great fun, and if you've never done either of them you'll find something to enjoy at both.

However, I have to say the quality of Thorpe's offering was significantly higher than that at Alton. It was obvious that they'd invested pretty heavily into the event and it really showed through. I really hope Alton can bounce back and improve for next year, when we'll also have Nemesis back.

  5. Lucifer's Lair: We didn't end up spending a lot of time in this area but the live band gave it a great atmosphere, and plenty of roaming actors to keep people on their toes.

Creature Campus: this year's Amity dance show, decent fun but it felt a bit sparse compared to previous years' offerings, not helped by some odd staging that meant you could only really see it properly from front-on.

  6. As well as the mazes there are free scare zones with roaming actors.

Death's Doors: an area with a lot of... er... doors. You knock on them and there may be actors inside. This year most of them seemed to be outside wandering so we didn't get many knocks answered.

The Crows of Mawkin Meadow: these creepy scarecrows have been around for several years but this year there was a more coherent storyline for them in an atmospheric setting - I really enjoyed it.

  7. Stitches: New for this year, themed around a toy maker. Lots of really original ideas I'd not seen before, great actors and scenery, I thought it was excellent.

All the mazes are upcharge attractions, though they do sell tickets to do them all as a package.

Overall this year's mazes felt like the reduction of quantity had helped improve the quality - even the weakest maze was stronger than some previous offerings (Platform 15, I'm looking at you)

  8. First up: Thorpe Park's Fright Nights.

3 scare mazes this year: Trailers, Survival Games and Stitches.

Trailers: the oldest of the 3, but still very good, with a great "cinema gone wrong" theme. Not much new this year but very much worth doing.

Survival Games: was new last year. This is the one where you get split up at the start, which I enjoy. The rest of it feels like it could use more scenery as you're just wandering in circles down bare corridors. It's OK.
