  3. The best holiday rentals come with a small trove of books. That's how I came upon Thomas Hardy's enchanting novel, Under the Greenwood Tree.
A pastoral romance with just an edge of satire, it is also an affectionate portrait of a group of rustic church musicians (the players' discussion of the merits and menace of various instruments is comic gold).
Hardy's happiest novel, this is a gentle, humorous elegy for a long gone way of life.

I have seen, and more I may see yet,
But that sight never shall I forget..."

  5. '[Hardy] was always exceptionally anxious and sensitive about reviews.... He might have spared himself the trouble: the divide between those who disliked his language, his lower-class characters, his troubling women and his gloom, and those who appreciated the beauty and imaginative power of his work, was already there and remained firmly fixed throughout his career as a novelist.' - Thomas Hardy by Claire Tomalin, pp.170-71

  6. I love this quote about Bathsheba and Gabriel. I've never noticed it before, but it struck me when I re-read FFTMC recently.

    > And you, my brother, of another flag
Join with us without borders or delay
Do not go gentle to a deadly scene

    #DavidSwanson got me to a #ThomasHardy poem:

    > "I shot him dead because —
    Because he was my foe,
    Just so: my foe of course he was;
    That's clear enough; although

    > "He thought he'd 'list, perhaps,
    Off-hand like — just as I —
Was out of work — had sold his traps —
    No other reason why.

  8. So little cause for carolings
    Of such ecstatic sound
    Was written on terrestrial things
    Afar or nigh around,
    That I could think
    there trembled through
    His happy good-night air
    Some blessed Hope,
    whereof he knew
    And I was unaware.
