If there’s one thing I’ve learned recently, in trying to build and install some shelves, it’s that there is not one goddamn square corner or plumb wall in this entire house. #ThisOldHouse

The Crane Estate in #IpswichMA, which is on a hill, used a cistern system to collect and store rainwater for the entire household and their gardens!
#ThisOldHouse - What Is a #Cistern?
A cistern is a water storage system used in homes and landscapes. Learn how they work and when you might need one.

"A cistern is an underground tank that captures and stores rainwater that you can use for irrigation, emergencies, or daily water needs. Cisterns are especially helpful in areas with unreliable or expensive municipal water systems. We’ll explore the different types of cisterns, describe the benefits each offers, and explain how cisterns differ from wells in the guide below.
Definition of a Cistern
A cistern is a watertight tank that collects and stores water for later use and is typically made of reinforced concrete, cinder block, precast concrete, fiberglass, and steel. Your home’s gutters and downspouts usually funnel rainwater into your cistern, and you can use that water as a supplemental supply, an emergency supply, or for irrigation. Cisterns can also hold groundwater, household greywater, spring water, well water, or treated city water.
Professionals can install cisterns above ground, underground, or into building structures. Burying cisterns underground might be the best option, though, as underground cisterns keep water cool during warm months and prevent it from freezing during colder weather.
Cisterns intended for domestic use typically hold at least 5,000 gallons, but sizes and setups vary according to homeowners’ needs."

I had completely missed the fact that #ThisOldHouse has their new season rebuilding here in #Asheville after #Helene, which is pretty amazing. So glad they did this. (And thanks to @avlcharlie for pointing it out.)
Link is to Ep 1, but others are available, too.

With the temps climbing, I thought it might be nice to dig back into some of my winter #photos. So here. Have some #snow and #ice. We’ve since patched that section of gutter on #ThisOldHouse, but this was a fun side effect of needing a repair over the past winter.

This doesn't really bundle with any other #photos I'm planning to share, so have an old and dirty #ArtDeco doorknob. It's one of the odd features we like about #ThisOldHouse. I really need to clean them up... Just a century or so of landlord special around them.

Being the only one working on remodeling my mom’s 110-year-old nightmare house with her and my son in it is hard and lonely.
Having something to look forward to and feeling wanted can make all the difference.
I'm giving myself 1-month to get either the bathroom or the kitchen done. 😑

"This Ole House" (sometimes spelled "#ThisOldHouse") is an American #popular #song #written by #StuartHamblen, and published in 1954. #RosemaryClooney's version reached the top of the popular music charts in both the US and the UK in 1954. The song again topped the UK chart in 1981 in a recording by #ShakinStevens.

I have loved #DoctorWho since I was a kid and saw #TomBaker and #K9 for the very first time airing on my local #PBS station on Saturday mornings.
It actually was through a love of Doctor Who that also introduced me to #ThisOldHouse and #TheNewYankeeWorkshop since both shows came on right after Doctor Who.
And I love #NcutiGatwa! I fell in love with his character on #SexEducation!
#GillianAnderson was the reason I tuned into Sex Education on #Netflix but it was Ncuti Gatwa and #AsaButterfield and #EmmaMackey that made me addicted to the series.
So when they announced that these new series of Doctor Who would only be streamed on #DisneyPlus I was gutted.
While I love Doctor Who, I don't love it that much. No way in hell am I going to give #Disney, the most parasitical Company on the planet, any money.
So one day maybe I'll catch Ncuti's performance as #TheDoctor.
Until then, I'll fondly reflect on my memories of #JodieWhittaker, #PeterCapaldi, #DavidTennant, #MattSmith, #ChristopherEccleston, #ColinBaker, #PeterDavison, and #TomBaker.
Or maybe I'll just #torrent the episodes some day.

And that concludes today’s episode of This Old House. Can I please go outside and play now? 🛠️

Done. Now I have to decide which veggies to plant. 🌱
Oh, and bonus points: Each box is exactly 1 square meter, just to tick off the “freedom units” crowd. 😉
-
Building new raised beds out of old fence materials so that I can grow more veggies this summer. 🪚👨🏽🌾
-
Once again no help from anyone doing something I was not planning to do.
I can't wait to get my mother's house fixed up.
-
I’m really proud of myself this morning. I just installed a “new” used door at my home. Thanks to my local recycling center and great instructions from PBS’s This Old House, it only cost me $15 and took less than 2 hours to complete the task. 🚪🛠️
When people want to defund things like recycling centers, libraries, or public television, I don’t think they understand the harm they’re doing. These invaluable resources help all of us learn, make, create, repair, do, and more. It’s stupid when conservatives scream about the tiny investments we make in public resources like these given their contributions to lifelong learning and overall benefits to society.
-
We did a blower test as part of slowly improving the efficiency of of our 110+ year old home.
LOTS of room for improvement. Thankfully several decades of paint have sealed most of the older windows. Our upstairs crawlspaces are the biggest culprits (known).
Might be a summer project to redo them and close up what we can

It was a full week in so many ways, so i decided on a #lazyday

"This Old House" landscape expert Roger Cook has died at 70 following a lengthy illness. Cook joined the PBS series in 1982, continuing with Ask This Old House from 2002 to 2020 when health issues forced him to retire.

Shattered Dreams.
Houses are what dreams & nightmares are both made of.
I often wonder what stories old, abandoned homes would tell. If their doors, walls & windows could share many stories from when people lived & loved inside the house.
