Anyone out there with a Lenovo ThinkStation P360 can let me know if it has ReBar support and if you can send me pictures of the Advanced -> CPU features uefi page?

Yeah, docs say it has rebar support and point you to Nvidia stuff. My P340 also has rebar support, but it’s only if it detects an nvidia card. Almost like it’s a whitelist.

I know about the uefi and bios chip hacks, but nothing stating it’s worked on a P340 or if it’s needed on a P360. I’ll probably try them anyway if I can’t find a solid answer.

Please boost for visibility. I’d really like to avoid having to build a machine.

Aufrüsten von 512 SSD auf 1TB SSD bei einer #Thinkstation #ThinkstationP340Tower und was es da alles für #Stolpersteine geben kann. Zumindest für jemanden, der als Halb-Laie versucht #Opensource Tools einzusetzen und lange keine Hardware mehr an Computern ausgetauscht hat.

Spoiler: es ist nichts kaputtgegangen und ich musste kein Backup einspielen. Trotzdem war es hakelig.

Hey everyone 👋

I’m diving deeper into running AI models locally—because, let’s be real, the cloud is just someone else’s computer, and I’d rather have full control over my setup. Renting server space is cheap and easy, but it doesn’t give me the hands-on freedom I’m craving.

So, I’m thinking about building my own AI server/workstation! I’ve been eyeing some used ThinkStations (like the P620) or even a server rack, depending on cost and value. But I’d love your advice!

My Goal:
Run larger LLMs locally on a budget-friendly but powerful setup. Since I don’t need gaming features (ray tracing, DLSS, etc.), I’m leaning toward used server GPUs that offer great performance for AI workloads.

Questions for the Community:
1. Does anyone have experience with these GPUs? Which one would you recommend for running larger LLMs locally?
2. Are there other budget-friendly server GPUs I might have missed that are great for AI workloads?
3. Any tips for building a cost-effective AI workstation? (Cooling, power supply, compatibility, etc.)
4. What’s your go-to setup for local AI inference? I’d love to hear about your experiences!

I’m all about balancing cost and performance, so any insights or recommendations are hugely appreciated.

So, I decided to max the RAM out on my #Lenovo #Thinkstation #P340. It takes 128GB of RAM. It gets here, I install it, machine just turns off and on. I troubleshoot, and if I pull the ram from DIMM slot 4, it boots fine. Not a bad stick as I rotate through them and they all test fine. I reinstall the original ram (2x 16GB sticks) and I notice the same slot is bad.

Call in to get warranty work, get the mobo swapped, same issue. 🤔 While the tech is on the phone to get another mobo on the way, I get some idea that maybe it's an allocation issue since it's happening during POST- you know- like the old #BeOS >1GB RAM issue. I pull my 3.2TB Samsung PCIe AIC NVME and 💥, machine boots and posts all ram- including DIMM slot 4. I try my NVME in another slot and same issue. 😓

So, weird issue- I can't have a PCIe AIC NVME (or at least this one anyway) and have all 4 ram slots work in a Lenovo ThinkStation P340 tower system. You'd think for a workstation-class machine, this wouldn't be an issue. But here we are. 128GB of RAM or an additional 3.2TB of screamin fast PCIe NVME server-class storage. 😐

Shout-out to Lenovo for finding my non-FRU part and getting it to me to make my case pretty!

К тому же, RTX 4090 настолько толстая, что занимает на стандартной материнке 3 слота PCIe — а ещё ведь нужно пространство для полноценного обдува. В 2020 году я использовал эту же машину, которая достигала скорости в 11 миллионов IOPS и 66 ГБ/с на базе одного процессора AMD ThreadRipper . Однако, чтобы установить в неё RTX 4090, пришлось извлечь большинство SSD и (тоже горячую) сетевую карту Mellanox 200Gbe. В итоге значительная часть полезного оборудования оказалась не задействована… Долго терпеть я такое не смог и решил перейти к активным действиям.

Ok great, my #Lenovo #Thinkstation won't boot anymore. Just a green LED on the PSU and on the power button, nothing more. No beeps, no fans, nothing. Seems to have happened after swapping the Quadro GPU for the GeForce but even swapping it back doesn't help. Even took out almost everything else, nothing. Whelp! I'm at a loss here, help me #hardware buffs!

Guess what? A new possibly very long thread, this time about Athena, my next main #workstation as a successor to Sargo (the current Mac Pro 5,1 setup) based around the #Lenovo #ThinkStation P500. I already bought a low spec P500 and an 18-core #Xeon E5-2699 v3 CPU upgrade; later on I'll get 64 GB of DDR4 ECC memory, a so called "Flex M.2 Adapter" for the special Flex slot on the motherboard and maybe an additional GPU alongside my new Radeon Pro W5700 for KVM's and PCI passthrough.

Which would you choose and what would you do with it? A pack of playing cards for scale.
