  6. My 1 bed bachelor pad has a portable aircon, but no window vent dingus, so I’ve decided to make one from wood offcuts and a 3D printed socket for the adaptor at the end of the hose that’s supposed to attach to said dingus.

I could have bought one from Amazon for $40 delivered but ::waves arms at late stage capitalism::.

Not just for cost or delivery/fuel waste reasons – this is a continued expression of my addition to the “3/5/x R’s”: ”Adapt”.

Not only am I utilising offcuts, but also iKEA shelf upright extensions, in a way I can take them apart to return them to original purpose.

Yes, I hoard offcuts and extras of things like IKEA shelf systems (Gorn and Sten for the win!) – I do that because those trees have already been cut down, and they’re often milled to a “good enough” spec for such projects.

Offcuts often get used in multiple ways over their life with me. I lament leaving bed slats on hard waste pickup nights! And yes, I have rescued some of those and used them in the past.

I’m not making much of a difference in the grand scheme of things, but it feels good to be creative in reuse.

It’s funny, my fave grandparent (Pa) and my second father-in-law (one of nature’s gentlemen), who both lived through the depression (my Pa as an adult and father, my father-in-law as a child) exemplified this ”hoard”/reuse/adapt philosophy as well.

No real point to this post except to perhaps encourage others to adapt what’s already around them.

There is a real sense of accomplishment in making something with your own hands which I commend to everyone.

  11. I'm sitting here, thinking how beautiful it is that some people still don't fall for marketing tricks :blobthinksmart: - they choose what's truly the best for the price. I like to think I'm one of them... until I realize I'm wrong :blobfacepalm:

For me, "the best" often means "the most privacy-respecting", not necessarily the most powerful or feature-rich 🔐

But it shouldn't be this way! We shouldn't have to choose between privacy and quality! Privacy should be a default - something normal users don't even have to worry about.

But it's not. And that's sad :blobsad: So how do we change that? :blobthinking:

  18. MAGA is easily duped.
    Proof?
    🔹 Made Trump POTUS45.
🔹 Realized their mistake, he lost POTUS46.
🔹 Fell for his grift again, stuck with him for POTUS46.
🔹 But he’ll fail again, costing them POTUS47 to another Republican.

  23. @bikenut wait, people still go inside to buy drinks? Has anyone heard of a drive-thru. I know McDonald's doesn't have the healthiest drinks in the world but you can still buy a goddamn bottle of water from McDonald's. #thinksmart

  28. Refactored laser, resin and fdm. They took up far far too much space. Collapsed two metal racks. Turned two others into one rolling central chimera. Tore everything off the pegboard. Made two toolboxes and sent one to work. Rebuilt everything (generally) with purpose behind it. Whole project is trying to create the room for a table saw and find a better workflow for all my tendencies. A little over a week in. I can see the light. Few more days.

#ThinkSmart
